Bad-Ass Basic RPG $0.00

Bad-Ass Basic RPG: $0.00

Publisher: Ironic Hero Games

What Is This?

This is a Roleplaying Game. A complete(ish), heroic fantasy adventure game with Old-School inspirations.

Is it OSR?

I don’t know. It’s an attempt to recapture the feeling of playing the popular fantasy RPGs of the 80s and 90s. Specifically my feelings. Or an incredibly idealized version of my feelings.

It’s not OSR in that it doesn’t seek to emulate the hardcore exploration-based resource-management XP-for-gold style many associate with the OSR. It’s not about acquiring wealth and power through morally-questionable means.

It’s heroic. You play heroes. You save villages and stop demons and overthrow Dark Lords. You cancel the apocalypse. You stop bad guys from acquiring wealth and power through morally-questionable means.

It is OSR in that it’s fast. It’s simple. It’s familiar. It’s largely compatible with all sorts of OSR stuff floating around out there. You can make a character in less than two minutes. It follows the “Rulings, not Rules” philosophy. If it’s not combat or spell-casting, there’s not much support for how it works. Like in Olden Days of Yore.

You’re a little more powerful than other games. You’re a Bad-Ass. Hence the name.

I also got rid of some baked-in setting and gameplay assumptions that I deem problematic.

Is it OSR? Is it Sword Dream? Is that still a thing?

It’s five double-sided folded printouts that give you everything you need to play a semi-quasi-traditional-but-modern-and-decolonized heroic fantasy RPG in a very particular way that I enjoy.

You get:

Character Booklets

A Rules Booklet

An Arms and Equipment Booklet

A DM’s Booklet

A Booklet of Spells

Oh, and it’s free.
