DOTGEON / $1.00

DOTGEON
Publisher: Possible Worlds Games

DOTGEON is a simple pen-&-paper game based on la pipopipette (popularly known as Dots & Boxes) first published in the 19th century by French mathematician Édouard Lucas. While similar to la pipopipette, DOTGEON incorporates random dice rolls into the game and creates a dungeon or building’s floor plan for use in TTRPGs upon completion.

All you need to play DOTGEON is:

  • A drawing utensil
  • Two or more players
  • One six-sided die (d6)
  • A dot grid (included)

DOTGEON starts with an empty grid of equidistant dots. This grid can be any size, and need not feature an equal number of rows and columns. A large, 43x33 dot printable grid is included with these rules. Players are encouraged to draw or cut out grids at whatever dimensions they’d like, but a 10x10 minimum grid is recommended.

DOTGEON is a one-page game formatted to fit on a single, 8.5x11" letter-sized piece of paper.

Dating.sim / $6.00

Dating.sim
Publisher: Possible Worlds Games

Dating.sim is a light-hearted romance roleplaying game inspired by the TV show The Dating Game as well as the “dating simulator” video game genre. Dating simulators are narrative-heavy games where players can date one of multiple eligible characters via choose-your-own-adventure-style conversations. Make the right choices and a character might like you more, make the wrong choices and they might like you less. Dating.sim recreates this structure through competitive roleplaying, with players improvising multiple-choice options for one player to select over the course of a date.

In round one of Dating.sim, everyone roleplays different characters and one player (called the Lead) selects a date from a host of suitors (called Dates). In round two, the winning character accompanies the Lead on a date, and all remaining players roleplay the Lead together. The Date player awards points for creativity and behavior, and the player with the most points at the game’s end gets to help finish the story!

To play Dating.sim, you’ll need:

  • Three or more players
  • Writing utensils
  • A stack of notecards (3” x 5” recommended)
  • A timer (approximately 30 minutes)
  • A six-sided die (optional)

Dating.sim is 22 pages long, and modifications are included for online play.

Dating.sim is illustrated by Sam “Skullboy” Mameli, a freelance fantasy artist whose work can be found at betterlegends.com, patreon.com/better_legends, and on Instagram as @better_legends.

Scene Thieves / $6.00

Scene Thieves
Publisher: Possible Worlds Games

Scene Thieves is a theatrical roleplaying game where players collaboratively “write” a play while simultaneously choreographing an elaborate heist in the background.

During the game’s pre-show, players create a band of thieves who use theatrical performances as cover for their crimes. Players also establish broad strokes for the game’s show before writing down a variety of props on notecards. Then, it’s showtime. In Act I, everyone draws prop cards from a pot and incorporates them into the progression of both the play and the heist. At Intermission, players take note of whether the evening is trending towards comedy or tragedy. In Act II, they have a final chance to reverse their fates before the end of the game.

To play Scene Thieves, you’ll need:

  • Two or more players
  • A coin
  • Writing utensils
  • A six-sided die (optional)
  • A stack of notecards (3” x 5” recommended)
  • A pot for collecting and mixing cards, like a hat or a bowl

Scene Thieves is 25 pages long, and modifications are included for online play.

Scene Thieves is illustrated by Pol Clarissou, a filthy little creature who beguiles the unwary eye with mystifying devices such as “Art,” “Videogames,” and other such tricks. You may gaze upon his wretched designs at polclarissou.itch.io or polclarissou.com, and find him on Twitter as @polclarissou.

Wishless / $6.00

Wishless
Publisher: Possible Worlds Games

Wishless is a roleplaying game set in a world where, once upon a time, every living person was given three wishes. Players portray wish-seekers called Hunters who’ve already used their wishes and are chasing down Leads on the existence of new and unused ones.

Players roll dice in Wishless to overcome obstacles, and situation-relevant skills and wishes increase the odds of their rolls. Players can also intentionally decrease their odds by making plot wagers, assuring certain plot developments regardless of a roll’s success.

Wishless requires one player to take on the role of the Secretary, describing the world of the game and the impact Hunters have on it. They don’t need to do any preparation, but should be comfortable improvising story beats based on player suggestions. Wishless can also be played in a single sitting or over multiple game sessions to create a longer, campaign-style story.

To play Wishless, you’ll need:

  • Two or more players (one playing the Secretary)
  • Two six-sided dice (2d6) per player
  • A stack of notecards (3” x 5” recommended)
  • Writing materials (paper and writing utensils)

Wishless is 28 pages long, and recommendations are included for online play.

Glassmakers' Fall is an apocalyptic fantasy game I made to tie into my serial novel Aspects of Sand.

Broken Wilds  is a fantasy ttrpg that I've been developing for 6+ years. It combines my love of the symbol-laden dream logic of fairytales and legends, interest in tedious material history, and lifelong sense of nonbelonging and isolation into a strange, sad RPG.  Basically, it's everything I wanted Fantasy TTRPGs.

It's  also not necessarily "Finished" or whatever --projects like this kinda never are. However, it's very much a complete game. It even includes an introductory adventure, The White Eyes of Aspenbloom.

I've elected to use Google Docs to release this game. I've been honing Broken Wild's gdoc so I can use as a table reference for a few years now. With the Outline feature, it's very quick to navigate, and I have no trouble viewing it on my phone. Eventually it occurred to me that this was perhaps actually an excellent way to release a core game.

...but just in case that's an issue for anyone, I've also released a very bare bones pdf.

Addendum: now that I know gdocs allows alt text, I'll start adding that in as I have time!

Battle Century G Remastered [$14.99]

Battle Century G Remastered [$14.99]:

iQL0qP.png

Battle Century G Remastered is the definitive edition of the game, combining the contents of Battle Century G and Battle Century Z then improving upon them for a cinematic action experience in the style of mecha anime & videogames.

Express your creativity without mechanical restrictions. The game is effects-based, so how you do something does not matter as much as what you do. And what you do is pilot a kickass Mecha, command a badass Battleship, or ride a terrifying Kaiju.

Employ tactics and teamwork to defeat your enemies. Enemies in Battle Century G are powerful, you'll have to adapt on the fly to their weapons and schemes, watch each other's backs with your allies to ensure no one gets shot down, and employ synchronized combination attacks to defeat superbosses.

Explore a solarpunk future. The setting included in this book presents an environmentalist, inclusive and transhumanist society opposing an industrialist empire with the looming threat of kaiju mechabeasts on the horizon. It is inspired by the likes of Turn A GundamNausicaa of the Valley of the WindDune and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

IN THIS BOOK YOU WILL FIND
  •  Player Characters that come out of Character Creation being on par with the protagonist of an anime series.
  • Fast paced combat that usually ends in three to five turns with no more than one roll per turn.
  • An empowering combat system that let you decide when you're going to have your big cool moment instead of being at the whims of the dice.
  • Balanced PC options to keep all players at a comparable power level.
  • Setting-agnostic mechanics that can function in any kind of mecha game and are easily reskinned to other genres, from magical girls to tokusatsu heroes.
  • Super robot action that lets you punch mountains so hard they explode and shoot your enemies into the sun.
  • Alternate rules modules to tweak the game to your liking, ranging from custom weapons to corruption mechanics.
  • Over 50 premade PC and NPC builds that include playing advice to save you time as a GM or regular player.
  • An anarchist, environmentalist, transhumanist society with the benefits and problems that invites.
  • Transhuman themes and character options, from hair of a leafy green color that absorbs sunlight to changing your biological sex at will.

Battle Century G Remastered is a game best suited for 3-5 players plus a GM.

Head Trip [Free]

Head Trip [Free]:

Head Trip is a game for four of five players that can be played with two standard decks of playing cards. There are two ways to play the game. The first way to play is as a four-player competitive card game. During the game, each player will portray one aspect of the personality of a teenage boy named Bobby. Only one aspect can control Bobby's actions at any given time, so the players will have to compete for control as he faces a series of challenges.

The second way to play is as a five-player semi-cooperative roleplaying game. During the game, four of the players play as in the four-player competitive card game. The fifth player, however, will play as the Headmaster. The Headmaster's job is to provide narrative context for everything that happens in the game by working with the other players to tell as story about Bobby's experiences.

A Simple Walk in the Woods [Free]:

You (or you and a friend) decided to go for a stroll through the woods one sunny, autumn day. You have heard of rumors of the forest being…odd but you brush them off as nonsense children and elders like to talk about in their boredom. After a few hours, you feel a sense of drowsiness and decide to take a nap next to a large oak tree that sits in a small clearing. You are suddenly awakened to find yourself still under the tree, but the sun has set. The full moon shining brightly, illuminating the forest in a brilliant light. As you look around, you find yourself unsure of where you came from, the pathway to the tree you took earlier is gone too!

Utterly lost, you have no choice but to walk through the woods in the middle of the night to find a way out.

Dreaming the Cave [Free]

Dreaming the Cave [Free]:

51ESu3.png

In this game, two people explore a surrealistic dream connection to continue a partnership between avant-garde Czech artists Toyen and Jindřich Štyrský beyond Štyrský's early death.

Two players will collectively create dream stories to connect Toyen and Štyrský and Toyen. They will be prompted to develop those stories by drawing cards with the artists’ paintings, placed along the path in Štyrský’s painting Jeskyně (The Cave).

About the artists

Toyen, born Marie Čermínová, (1902-1980) was a genderqueer Czech painter, drafter, and illustrator. Toyen refused to use feminine endings for their name, which has been proposed as coming from the Czech expression ‘to je on’ (‘it is he’). Their work heavily explored gender issues and sexual politics.

Jindřich Štyrský (1899-1942) was a Czech Surrealist painter, poet, editor, photographer, and graphic artist.

As artistic partners, they worked and exhibited together, moving from earlier Cubist work to Surrealism in partnership. They were both members of Czech avant-garde group Devětsil. In 1927, they founded their own art movement, Artificialism.

About this game

This game was designed for the Gaming Like It's 1926 game jam, which uses work that has entered the public domain in 2022.

It is the third in a series of games that engage with art by creating experiences through games.

The first two in the series were The 24th Kandinsky and Fish Magic.

Design notes

Dreaming the Cave is one of a series of games that engages players with a deeper understanding of works of art by creating experiences with them. In this game, players will have a chance to experience a series of paintings by important but not particularly well-known artists.

With Štyrský’s painting entering the public domain, it was crying out to be the basis for a game, just because it looks like a boardgame already in some ways!

The game isn’t a lesson in art history as such but I hope it is an opportunity to consider these works in terms of aesthetic and thematic principles, based just on what can be observed. By creating your own dream-stories, you’ll see the paintings in a different way.

Dreams don’t make sense. When further explored they tend to make less sense in some ways but more sense in others. The interaction between two players in telling a dream plays with this tension of knowability and describability.

Many tabletop games engage heavily with creative thinking processes and often are designed to help with that creativity. Yet, most creativity is directed (and academic definitions of creativity typically include some requirement of usefulness).
This game isn’t trying to be useful in the world, and it’s not trying to generate ideas that persist. It’s about creating an experience of allowing your mind to do what it doesn’t have a chance to do while awake very often.

Sapphic Slumber Party is itchfunding!

kQzOsY.png

Progress: $51 out of $250

Be brave. Be beautiful. Fall in love, just for a moment. And really just nail a beautiful girl with a pillow.

Sapphic Slumber Party is a short zine game for 2-5 about a pillow fight at a slumber party, and all the joyful, melancholy, amorous, and vulnerable feelings that come out when you're playing in your PJs. Brief and lyrical, Sapphic Slumber Party is GMless and plays in 30-45 minutes.

Sapphic Slumber Party is itchfunding for Zine Month! That means it's crowdfunding right here on itch. The game is already finished and laid out; your purchase now will help create a print version (see below for more details).

The Story

Sapphic Slumber Party was inspired by a piece of public domain art, a 19th-century lithograph (artist unknown) called "A Bed-Room Bombardment", which shows half-dressed young women having a pillow fight. Some of them jump into the fray with joyful competitiveness, some hang back in delighted trepidation; one of them lies prone on the bed, apparently having just gotten totally taken out. All of them are having a blast.

My girlfriend found this piece of art in the online archives of the Smithsonian and sent me a link, noting "someone should make a game about this." I agreed, so I did.

The Game

Sapphic Slumber Party is simple, short, and sweet. Make your character and tell your fellow players about her PJs and her anxieties; they'll help you figure out what's beautiful about her.

Then the pillow fight begins. There's no HP in a pillow fight, no victory or defeat that's more than momentary, just the vulnerability that being alone together and intimate and playing around create. Eventually that vulnerability spills over in a way that ends the pillow fight; play to find out exactly how.

The Writer

ifc3pM.jpg

I'm a writer and game designer in Montreal, QC. I'm also an avid tabletop game-player and GM, a lesbian, and a trans woman. My work is interested in domesticity, intimacy, flirtation, and being gay as hell. A lot of my games writing has been digital, and you can see it on my itch page; I was also the writer and co-designer on Denial and Yearning, a ZineQuest project about lesbian romance novels which successfully funded in 2021. My writing also appears in Hard Wired Island.

What You Get For Backing

If you buy a digital copy of Sapphic Slumber Party, you'll receive a 9-page PDF containing the rules of the game and a foreword, about 500 words.

If you buy a physical copy, you'll get all of the above plus a beautiful, professionally printed copy of Sapphic Slumber Party mailed to you. Shipping is included in the price.

Plus, as a special thank you, a pdf copy of Winona Rolls Persuasion, a short story about nerdy girls using role-playing games to flirt.

Timeline and Risks

Since this is an itchfunding project, it's only fair to identify risks. The game is fully written and laid out, and pdfs are available now for backers at all levels; your purchase of a digital copy is just that, a purchase, not a pledge or pre-order.

For physical copies, the game has not been printed. Obviously global events - the pandemic, global supply chain problems, etc. - introduce a risk of delays to any print run. However, I will be using a well-regarded printer I've worked with before, including during the pandemic, who has always provided a quick turnaround.

Allowing for padding and time for me to organize, pack, and ship, I expect to be able to mail physical copies within two months of the project successfully funding. I've worked to fulfill crowdfunding campaigns for zines before, and have a network of game designer friends who've been helping me to plan for this fulfillment process.

What if you don't fund?!

Not to worry! First of all, you'll still receive a digital copy of Sapphic Slumber Party immediately. Second of all, I plan on a print run regardless of the success of itchfunding. It is possible the printing will be delayed in that event, but I do have contingency plans in place to fund the print run. You'll get your zine even if we don't hit our goal.

I'm confused, what IS itchfunding?!

Itchfunding is crowdfunding, right here on itch. I chose itchfunding over a platform like Kickstarter because I'm trying to divest from Kickstarter. Find out more here: https://itchfunding.games/#faq.

Blades of the Immortals (Early Access) [Free]

Blades of the Immortals (Early Access) [Free]:

7Kw175.jpg

Blades of the Immortals is a tabletop roleplaying game inspired by xianxia fiction - a genre of Chinese fantasy about immortal cultivators - practitioners of esoteric internal alchemies that grant superhuman abilities - and their quests for power and immortality. It uses the Forged in the Dark rules engine developed by John Harper, as seen in games like Blades in the Dark and Beam Saber.

In  Blades of the Immortals, you will take on the roles of cultivators, striving for the glory of your sect, your own ambitions, and the ultimate prize - immortality. You will viciously struggle for scarce resources, compete for the patronage of powerful and influential teachers, gather allies to your banner, and scheme against your enemies. Your characters will wield mystical treasures and supernatural spell-arts, mastering the very laws of the cosmos as their weapons, as they become entangled in centuries-long vendettas between deathless wizard-kings.

Raise your blades to heaven, cultivators! You will live forever, or die trying.

This is an incomplete, pre-release version of the game, but Blades of the Immortals is playable in its current state. The book includes:

  • 9 cultivator playbooks, each walking a different path to immortality
  • 6 faction playbooks, with distinctive narrative focuses to shape your games
  • The core game engine
  • Rules for designing and creating your characters' mystic techniques and treasures

The Dungeon Game [Free]:

e3G3kH.png

A simple game about building a dungeon (or forest, or town, whatever) & then fighting the monsters within. I wrote and playtested it with my 4-year old son.

It uses minis/game pieces and wooden blocks and can be played with or without a GM. Adventurers explore a dungeon or cool location, searching for treasure and fighting monsters. I don’t really like “suggested ages” or whatever, but 3 and up seems like a solid range.

Also available in print from DriveThruRPG!

Historical Note: These works were originally published pseudonymously, and due to the difficulty involved in redesigning their covers at this late date, that name has been preserved. They have also not been edited for content since their original publication, and may still address some themes in ways the author might do differently today.

Is It Cold In The Water? [Free]

Is It Cold In The Water? [Free]:

Wtt%2BZw.png

Explore the euphoria and freedom of the club, the performance of identity and who you can truly be in the solo table top roleplaying game.

Is It Cold In The Water? is a love letter in the format of a solo journaling (or lyric) game to musical artist Sophie, who's life was tragically cut short on January 30th 2021 whilst she took photos of the full moon. The game was also created during the COVID-19 global pandemic, when celebrating and grieving her life and her music with our friends and loved ones - especially in a night club setting - was impossible.

Explore a night of expression and emotion, set to her debut album. You get to realise joyful truths about the people you love, the identity you are performing for others, and the world around you as you reach euphoric heights on the dancefloor. Emulate the joy of release and freedom on a safe dancefloor full of beautiful queer people. You are safe here, you are free.

A note from the author (me, hi!) - Sophie's identity as a transwoman was very important to the queer spaces and music she made. It was at her shows and discussing her music I met and made some of the closest friends I have. My best friend, Arsène, is one of those people - we met on a fan page from her music and now we live together! I'm not asking for (and don't want) any money for this game, but if the mood strikes you please donate to his ongoing transition fund if you have any spare change: https://bit.ly/3KRGxNE

Diapers & Quests is a one-shot tabletop roleplaying game thematically based on a popular 90s cartoon about adventurous toddlers.

You and your friends are not only toddlers; you are adventurers! Not content to hide safely behind the gates and walls the adults have put in front of you, you constantly seek ways to escape to find excitement and fun. Today, however, something has gone wrong, and you’re the only toddlers clever enough for the job. Break free from your bonds! Escape captivity! Get back in time for naps!!!

Diapers & Quests was created for the mini ttrpg jam hosted by Backwater Games. It is a hack of Lasers & Feelings by John Harper.

Unnamed Fairy Princess Game [$3.00]

Unnamed Fairy Princess Game [$3.00]:

VXtXHr.png

As fairy princesses you are sworn to defend your land and your people, and are given strong magic to do so. Alas, you are not so good at controlling your magic as your parents and things go awry as much as they go well.

Create your own stories from the table prompts, use your magic to overcome problems and then deal with the problems you created in the process.

The fourth in the Comedy Evening series, The Unnamed Fairy Princess Game was spawned by a fellow designer wishing they had a Fairy Princess Game. It was tough to find a way to make wish fulfilment also be funny but it met the brief with flying colours, I love the result and I think this is my favourite RPG design to date.

Do you need to be princesses? No. It’s just a trope. Be whatever you like.

A game for 2-6 players and optional story guide.

In order to download this game you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of $3 USD. You will get access to the following files:

Extrasolar [Free]

Extrasolar [Free]:

“Extrasolar” is an RPG inspired by the Baths track of the same name, off the album Romaplasm. In it you play as the crew of a starship, borne through the void on massive solar sails and lazy plasma engines. To play, you’ll need some a few people and a deck of playing cards.

This is a very small and arguably incomplete game, made for the Record Collection 2K22 game jam. I had fun making it, and I hope you do reading it.
