Yet This is Hallowed Ground [$5.00]

Yet This is Hallowed Ground [$5.00]:

It is the year 1153 and shadows lurk beyond the comings and goings in the lands of His Majesty Louis VII, King of the Franks. In Yet This is Hallowed Ground, potent legacies of the pre-Christian past endure as spires rise, commerce expands, trade flourishes and hymns echo across Christendom from the British Isles to Constantinople. You are a group of pious investigators, the finest minds that the Universal Church has to offer. You have been sent to investigate a strange happening as legates of His Most Reverend Excellency, the Bishop of Vy├┤nes.

The game takes place in your choice of an abbey or nunnery in the blighted region of Averoigne, the creation of weird fiction author and Emperor of Dreams Clark Ashton Smith. Daily life in this house of God seems normal on the placid surface, and you are welcomed as an honoured guest. Everyone seems pleasant, if anxious. As the faithful prepare to sleep after Compline by the warm glow of candles, the illusion ends. Shadows lengthen and monstrous things ooze from the ground. Christ sits like a frost upon the earth, yet the old earth waits below, moist and hungry. You must adumbrate the mystery and purge the horrors before they consume you.

Yet This is Hallowed Ground is a Rooted in Trophy game by Philipp Doebler and James L. Smith written for the Dark Forest Jam combining elements of Trophy Dark and Gold by Jesse Ross and the Rooted in Trophy game Shadow Precinct by Eric Brunsell, as well as concepts from Brindlewood Bay by Jason Cordova and Cthulhu Dark by Graham Walmsley.  The rules of Trophy Gold are required to play this game.

YOLO - Last Bullet Edition. [Free]

YOLO - Last Bullet Edition. [Free]: by @MiskatonicUK

This game was written to satisfy my desire to roleplay in a high action, post apocalyptic, zombie infested world. It is inspired by my love of action-hu- mor-horror movies where everyday heroes face larger than life challenges and generally speaking come out on top. For inspiration you can draw upon any Zombie movie, but for me it was the “Shaun Of The Dead”, “Cockneys vs Zombies”, “Zombieland”, “Dead Snow”, style of movies that I wanted to emulate for my players, maybe with a dash of the “Resident Evil” franchise thrown in to gloss things up a little!

The Zombie survival genre is incredibly wide ranging and gives you the game master huge scope for one shot, quick games or continent spanning campaigns, or indeed anything in between.

It is also true to say that there are plenty of perfectly good Zombie genre RPG’s out there today, but I was looking for something rules light. Something story led and simple to play, with lots of heroic action, the stuff that movies are made of. Hopefully that is what I have achieved with YOLO.

YOLO provides a simple background and rules set to allow you to play highly cinematic games without the need for huge amounts of preparation. Everything you could possibly need, with the exception of pencils, paper, six sided dice, some simple counters and a few friends is included in this book.

YOLO uses the Open WUSHU system created by Daniel Bayn under license.

Rawdeal - The Playing Card RPG [Free]

Rawdeal - The Playing Card RPG [Free]: by @MiskatonicUK

Rawdeal is an simple core RPG system that came about by accident. A quiet holiday sitting playing with a pack of cards and reading a fantasy novel. I didn’t have any game books with me and no dice, but I really wanted to generate some characters based the novel, and well one thing led to another. The result was the Rawdeal system.

It's been available as a free download on miskatonic.co.uk for some time and has clocked up enough interest that I thought I'd make it more widely available.  It was a fun project for me to create - I hope it will be a bit of fun for you too.

Characters are defined by four basic attributes each linked to a card suit and instead of rolling dice you cut a pack of cards.

Have fun.

A Twinge of Sadness [Free]

A Twinge of Sadness [Free]: by @TheMostMagiCole

“You cannot protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness.” -Jonathan Safran Foer

As you spend a year together working towards a shared goal, there will be times when someone you know accidentally touches on that something, that pain, that memory so sensitive you flinch when you recall it. And they don't mean harm; how could they know? But it hurts the same nonetheless. Sometimes it is you who chooses to engage with that sadness, holding it out for the whole world to see. And sometimes you see that same pain on someone else's face. Do you offer comfort?

This is a game about sadness. Each character has a sad event from their past which will be brought up throughout the game at random times. You will explore that sadness together as you carve out a new way of living after the event.

  • Acknowledge your feelings of sadness.
  • Find comfort and healing amongst friends or colleagues.
  • Make it through each day one at a time.

This game concept comes out of my experience grieving for my step-brother who passed away July 5th, 2020 at the young age of 32. He was well-loved, funny, creative, and outgoing. Due to the pandemic and my then recent surgery, I was unable to attend his funeral or spend time grieving with my family. In the past few months, I have found that sadness and grief hit me at random times, like a jolt of lightning. They often come from unexpected things, and I wanted to capture that feeling in this game. I think it can be played in a fun setting or be used as a therapeutic way to dig into some of your own grief if the group of players is just right and onboard.

Damned Company [Free]

Damned Company [Free]: by @paolojcruz

The members of Damned Company aren’t your typical wetwork spooks. They operate in a world that has a dangerous sub-population of super-powered individuals, including a handful of very public independent costumed heroes, as well as organized villain syndicates.

Damned Company are hardened super-felons who’ve been offered a reduced sentence, work release, or conditional pardon, as long as they fulfill a set of mission orders from the Bureau of Transhuman Affairs (a/k/a “The Butcher’s Shop”), via their merciless handler Ayumi Wada (callsign: Tenderloin). They’re eased out of the Ostrander Ultramax prison system, then given cover identities, targets, and objectives. Their activities are closely regulated via nanobots in their bloodstream. Failure means a grueling remote execution.

A hack of Lady Blackbird by John Harper

To play this game, there must be one Game Master (GM) and at least two players who each control a pre-designed Operator.

Ideally, you’ll need at least seven (7) pieces of standard six-sided dice (d6) per player.

It’s designed as a self-contained mini-campaign, for 3 to 5 sessions, lasting about 120 minutes each.

This RPG can already be played, as is. However, updates are ongoing.

Supporting this game includes access to all future versions, including:

  • more Traits and Tags for longer campaigns
  • more Keys and Secrets to change your Operator's focus
  • more Hostiles to deal with

The Magus [$15.00]

The Magus [$15.00]: by @momatoes

NOTICE: All proceeds incurred until February 28, 2021 will be donated to a mental health organization based in the Philippines (tentatively: the National Center for Mental Health).

UPDATE as of 31 Jan: We've raised over $650!!

The Magus is crunchy. You will use several polyhedral dice to manage four traits: Focus, Power, Control, and Scars, which shape how the protagonist overcomes their challenges and meets their denouement after seven, fateful events.

Perhaps they sail to the Enigmatic North in search of the final homonculus.           Perhaps they burrow deep underground to escape their demon overlords.

Or perhaps they go mad with power, and plunder innocent lives for M O R E

The  Magus' fate is shaped by your creative writing, and the carefully calculated whims of the dice. Everything comes at a cost, however: will you spend your scant remaining time to acquire more powerful spells, or nurture the few connections keeping you human?

Overcome fantastic challenges with your fledgling power, meet strange creatures on your way: empresses with craven vulnerabilities, frog familiars seeking for masters, naive dreamers who believe in the goodness inside of you (why?).

Featuring exquisitely-designed pages, The Magus is a memorable experience about sacrifice, loneliness, and the power of magic and pathos coursing through all of us.

If you are in hardship and cannot afford this game, please contact me at hello@momatoes.com.

In order to download this game you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of $15 USD. You will get access to the following files:

A GM-less, planet-hopping, neo-noir RPG for 3-6 people inspired by the greatest sci-fi bounty hunter anime of all time

It’s the turn of the 25th century, and humanity has spread throughout the Inner System, a network of colony clusters connected by Transit Gates that make faster-than-light space travel possible.

Of course, anywhere people go, crime goes with ‘em. And when you can blow jurisdictions at the punch of a hyperdrive, The Man just can’t keep pace.

That’s where bounty hunters like you and the rest of your crew come in, with a license to run down and arrest the System’s Most Wanted throughout all six colony clusters.

But remember: this ain’t some license to kill; you only get paid if you hand over a bounty that’s still breathing.

Gubat Banwa [$9.99]

Gubat Banwa [$9.99]:  by @liquorcanini
The archipelago of never ending war...
Sorrowsong, sorrowsong, that song without end.
Rejoice in the glory of combat, may we never know peace:

Gubat-Banwa: The Warring States of Kitatak is a tactical combat and war drama roleplaying game set in a heroic fantasy setting inspired by Late Porcelain Period Philippines.

You play as Manggugubat, warrior-braves that make up  the warrior caste, followers of Datu, who enjoy prestige and regard oftentimes higher than their noble counterparts. As Manggugubat, you must define why you fight in this land of perpetual battle.

As a tactical combat roleplaying game, you should expect deep and rewarding combat encounters that focus on neat tricks, battlefield effects, and grid combat in the same vein as Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and Dungeons and Dragons 4E, with a system of roll under d20 that features trying to roll under your attack stat but higher than your target's Defense, to streamline and simulate Hit Chances in Tactics RPGs.

As a war-drama roleplaying game, expect an emphasis on relationships with other warriors, with your loved one, and intense interpolity politics with the other polities. Gubat Banwa expects you to play into these melodramas: sons having to kill their fathers for defecting to an enemy polity, daughters having to flee to the mountains to escape misogynistic responsibilities, loved ones killing each other slowly due to orders and/or emotions, best friends dueling at the top of a mountain in the midst of a storm as their ideologies bring them to a head. This features systems of game that focus on action and consequence, with a 4d4 rolling system meant to invoke the casting of lots with crocodile's teeth that Precolonial Filipinos would do.

This game is made for war stories, the likes one would see in Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre.  It’s about being forced to kill your closest loved one in the middle of a blood-stained sea in the midst of a storm because they serve a Datu that blasphemed your Sultan. War Drama narrative mechanics make sure that violence happens inevitably, in one way or another, all threads intertwining and coming to a head with tactical combat.

You will get:

  • The Manggugubat Book, which is for both players and those that will run the game, known as Mangaawit.
  • The Mangaawit Book, which is for Mangaawit to help them run and facilitate games in Gubat Banwa.
  • Upcoming is the Kitatak Copperplate Inscriptions, upon which more in depth lore of the setting can be found. It should be up soon!

In this game, expect...

  • ...war drama and interpersonal relationship mechanics.
  • ...tactical combat inspired by the likes of D&D4e, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, and Lancer.
  • A split between missions (Ventures) and downtime (Respite) drive the flow of combat of Gubat Banwa.
  • ...a setting inspired wholly by Late Porcelain Period Philippines and even some of Early Spanish Philippines, made to facilitate war narratives across the warring states of Kitatak.
  • ...all you need to run war story Ventures in said setting!

Failed Faith and Hope Asunder

Included is the first chapter of the FAILED FAITH AND HOPE ASUNDER Campaign, THE SEAS SPLIT FOR WE ALONE! You can use this to run a one shot with the game, or use it in tandem with the resources in the Core Rulebook to run your own game.

Note: Please also keep in mind that not all art has been installed yet! Look forward to updates! Thank you.

There are community copies that will be constantly refreshed for those that don't want to pay for Early Access. However, rest assured that every cent that is dropped here goes into paying for more art to bring Kitatak to life.

Strange Changeling Child [$5.00]

Strange Changeling Child [$5.00]: by @Lexi_the_Fae

Content Warning: This is a game about autism, ableism, the pain of pretending to be neurotypical, and the difficulties that neurotypicals place upon autistic people. It uses a metaphor that paints autistic people as literally non-human, which I personally resonate with in a positive way, but understand can be uncomfortable or triggering for others.

There’s a story that sometimes, fairies take children away and replace them with changelings: fairy-children of their own, who have strange mannerisms like being unwilling to look others in the eye, being more articulate than their age would suggest, or speaking with woodland creatures. All your life, people have whispered that you were a changeling, because they didn’t act the way they expected you to, didn’t fit in the way they wanted you to. This is mostly a case of unreasonable expectations on their part, but at the same time… you do have a little bit of fairy magic, don’t you? You’re already on such thin ice, will you reveal that magic to the people you care about, even if it might alienate you even further?

Strange Changeling Child is a solo game played with a single piece of paper, two six-sided dice that you can clearly tell apart from each other, and a writing implement. You can also play with a digital notepad file instead of a pencil and paper, but I suggest analogue if you’re able.

Over play, you'll narrate the story of a changeling who hasn't yet told any of their loved ones that they're secretly a fairy, but as play continues, those loved ones will find out, for better or for worse.

Currently, only the plain text, printer-friendly version of the game is available, but a fancier, prettier version made with Affinity Publisher will be available soon at no additional cost, along with any updates to the game text. Your support helps me make those updates possible!

Cover by Valis Teoh, whose work you can find here. Additional thanks to Emily Care Boss, Madeline McDaniel, and everyone involved in the IGDN Diversity Sponsorship of 2020!
