Chimera: A Fantasy, Modern & Sci-Fi Roleplaying Engine $10.00

Publisher: Dwarfare Games

A Chimera Is Born

The idea for the Chimera Roleplaying System began when I was trying to find a solution to my tabletop RPG needs. I wanted a game that was simple rules-wise, that felt familiar and contained the best aspects of the games I have played, but as issues started to emerge and fixes were applied, the game evolved into a completely different beast.

I won’t try to disguise this game as revolutionary, unique, nor say it is the best. What I will tell you is that it was put together with love and aimed towards those with some experience with tabletop roleplaying games that wish to play a rules-medium game but with enough options to cover most character archetypes.

acknowledgments

This chimeric beast heavily draws inspiration and mechanics from the following games (along with a few others). I highly recommend you check them out first!
Apocalypse World, by D. Vincent Baker.
d20 System, by Jonathan Tweet, Monte Cook, Skip Williams, and other contributors, such as Richard Baker.
Dungeon World, by Sage Latorra and Adam Koebel.
Fate Core, by Leonard Balsera, Brian Engard, Jeremy Keller, Ryan, Macklin, and Mike Olson.
If you’re a fan of Powered by the Apocalypse games, the core of Chimera will be very familiar to you. Liberties were taken to add, change, and deconstruct many of those game mechanics to adapt them into my own personal playing style. To the hardcore fans of PbtA, I apologize for this monster I have created. I hope it can inspire you to enrich your games.

Main Features

This is what the Chimera Roleplaying Engine is all about. You can also check the full-size preview link to read the rulebook's first seventeen pages and better grasp the core mechanics.

  • Chimeric Engine: This tabletop game engine supports running fantasy, modern, & sci-fi themed games.
  • Straightforward Resolution Mechanic: This game uses a dice pool mechanic where you only roll whenever the outcome of a task is uncertain and has some real consequences. You can either succeed, partially succeed, or fail—no need to look at Target Numbers to determine difficulty.
  • Different Approaches: When you make a move, you select what action you take, how you approach the situation, and what skills apply. You can choose from five actions, five approaches, and fifteen skills. E.g., I want to Fight with Force using my skills in Melee.
  • Flexible Characters: You can build your characters by determining your abilities, choosing from many races with inherent and optional traits, selecting extraordinary abilities called perks, choosing principles and goals, and determining your starting gear and wealth.
  • GM Toolkit: This book contains chapters aimed to help the game master know what their role is, understand their agenda, arbitrate the rules, and run the game. It also includes guides to create adventures, campaigns, enemies, curses, diseases, and traps, give rewards, create character options, numerous optional rules, enemies to pit against players, and an example campaign setting.
