What was the RPG Pipeline

The RPG Pipeline was a posting board to keep track of upcoming tabletop rpgs from 2015 to 2021 (this Blogger version began in 2019). It covered new English language ttrpgs and ttrpgs going into crowdfunding.

Weird Weird West [Free]

Weird Weird West [Free]: by @tmcgry

Weird Weird West - Art 1

What is Weird Weird West?

  • It's a PbtA hack
    • For fans of cinematic RPGs and narrative-focused story telling.
    • Barely any focus on numbers to remember, stats going up and down.
    • Much more focus on characters making interesting decisions.
  • Light on setting, heavy on feel.
    • Make the weird 1800s your own.
  • Rules light:
    • 10 Backgrounds.
    • 3 Archetypes.
    • Less than a dozen Moves per Archetype.
    • Simple Trauma system.
    • 8 Spells, each with Minor and Major effects.
    • Character creation takes <5 minutes.
  • Moves give you choices, not things to remember.
    • No Moves about "adding +2 to this". Every Move pushes the story forward.
  • Western tropes and themes.
    • Gun slingers, weird spell casters, obsessive scientists. Core rules are written for 1800s American Wild West, but Moves are designed to be loose enough to be used in Space Westerns, Contemporary Westerns, etc.
  • A whole bunch of original art
    • Made by yours truly. Royalty free images from Unsplash cropped, edited and manipulated by hand.

Weird Weird West - Art 3

Project Status

Weird Weird West is currently at alpha 0.5. It is extremely work in progress! The text, the art, this page - all of it will undoubtedly go through tons of changes before I'm happy enough to call it v1. But it is playable right now, albeit rough around the edges.

A very rough roadmap (in no particular order):

  • "core" Moves.
  • re-writing/re-structuring the Damage/Armour/Resting.
  • a dedicated GM section
  • further changes

Cost

Nothing! There may be a fuller version in the future with better art, etc. that I may charge for, but the basic core rules will always be free.

If you really do want to give some money right now, know that I massively appreciate your generosity (please do reach out to me on Twitter and let me know what you think about Weird Weird West!) but I'm a straight white guy in a full time IT job; I'd love for you to instead give whatever you would have given me to a charity.
