Walk Away from the Future is a short Wanderhome supplement about walking away from modernity and imperialism. It has the same general premise as Wanderhome—humanoid animals going on low-key journeys while figuring things out about themselves, each other, and the world. However, it takes place some 200 years later, after a few kingdoms tried to transform themselves into modern industrial empires.
Instead of actively getting on board the modernization project, unhappily going along with it, or being violently suppressed and murdered—as in human history—the animals collectively said “no!” They resisted, revolted, and refused to take part in it. When the imperialist kingdoms declared a lucrative colonialist enterprise or a war against internal and external foes, animals organized against it and nobody showed up to participate. While modernist ideologies claimed there was no turning back from “progress” and the “inevitable” techno-future, these animals called that bluff and walked away.
Consequently, inspired by Wanderhome and other Belonging Outside Belonging games, this tiny hack invites players to walk away from the failed ruins of modernity and rediscover or create other ways of being. Where do we go from here? Maybe we can find out together.
40 booklet-sized pages, including:
