What was the RPG Pipeline

The RPG Pipeline was a posting board to keep track of upcoming tabletop rpgs from 2015 to 2021 (this Blogger version began in 2019). It covered new English language ttrpgs and ttrpgs going into crowdfunding.

Blasting Off Again: A One-Shot RPG of Petty Villainy and Breaking Cycles

Blasting Off Again is a GMless one-shot tabletop RPG for 2 or more players. You are a team of recurring comic relief villains in a kids’ TV show (any show, not just Pokémon). Week after week, you go up against the heroes, and week after week they hand you your backsides. But if you play it a little smarter and learn from your mistakes, you just might be able to turn things around…

FAQ

Q: What’s the tone of this game?

A: Generally, lean into the silliness as much as possible, but don’t be afraid to get serious in the finale.

Q: When should I roll a die?

A: Only when the game tells you to. Unlike most RPGs, you don’t roll dice to determine success or failure.

Q: What should I do when it’s not clear whether an action would succeed or fail?

A: Go with whatever’s funnier. Whether your characters are competent or not at non-crucial moments doesn’t really matter, as long as you fail when it counts (and you will, because that’s how the game works).

Q: How long does this game take to play?

A: In my experience, between 2 and 3 hours.

Q: How should I handle NPCs?

A: Anyone can jump in to roleplay an NPC in a scene if they feel like it, but you can also resolve things through narration with nobody playing the NPCs at all. This is just as true for the heroes who foil your plans every episode.

Q: Why does this game exclusively use d4s?

A: They give you obnoxiously low numbers, and they have to be awkwardly designed around not having a “face-up” side. They're the comic relief villains of the dice world!

In all seriousness, I thought “3 vices, 1 virtue” was a good number for both, and smaller dice mean more arguments over who gets to be team leader.
