In Shadows of a Dark Past, you play an anti-hero trying to start a new life, free from the weight of past mistakes. You'll work to achieve your highest desires while avoiding your greatest fears. At every turn you’ll face complications and be tempted to give into your dark compulsions to get what you want. And while you try to build a new life, elements of your dark past refuse to stay in the shadows for long. Will you be able to start fresh, or will you pay a high price for the dark deeds of your past? Play to find out.
The design is built to help you tell cohesive and compelling stories while giving you interesting mechanical choices to make as you explore the struggle of a character driven by dark compulsions who is trying to be a better person.
It is inspired by the Motivation-Reaction Units concept by Dwight Swain, the epidemic mechanics of Pandemic, the card driven prompts system of The Wretched by Chris Bissette, the action resolution system of Ironsworn by Shawn Tompkin, the resource management of the Cypher System by Monte Cook games, the Progress/Taints system of The Outcast by Cezar Capacle, the Thread/Character lists in the Mythic Game Master Emulator by Tana Pigeon, and the bonds generation system in Session Zero by Meghan Cross. I'm sure I was influenced by countless other game designers as well, so let me just say thank you to all of the independent RPG creators. You've given me endless enjoyment in the worlds you've helped me create.
