Far in the future, long after a devastating war ravaged the earth with intense EMP bombs, some of the surviving humans discovered Magic. The intense electromagnetic energy damaged the fabric of the universe, and weakened the veil between our world and others. This fabric is called the Aether, the previously theoretical fluid that energy waves travel through. It pervades the entire universe, and after being weakened around our planet, suddenly small amounts of electromagnetism could cause portals to open up between two places. Because of this new weakness, some spiritualists and scientists studied and found ways to control these rifts using the body’s natural electromagnetism, creating Magic.
In this world, Magic can do two things: Open portals called rifts, and create plasmoids like fire or lightning. Creative use of rifts can yield versatile results that allow someone to fly (by exposing them via many small portals to the gravityless expanse of the Aether), summon shard-like weapons and surfaces (by altering the nature of a portal into a glass-like substance called Arcanum), and of course, travel great distances.
Because of the volatile nature of electromagnetic energy, all old-world electronic and electrical systems that are given power immediately implode and throw plasma like fire and lightning in all directions. This has left technology just out of reach for people all around the world. The surviving humans have formed primitive colonies, most in a pre-industrial and many in a medieval technology level. Concurrent across all of these surviving cultures, and spanning the globe, is a network of warriors called Keepers. The Keepers are trained and trusted warriors under the guidance of The Overseer. They roam between towns and defend the people from mutated animals, portal daemons, and other dangers. Some use swords, some use rifles, and some cast rifts through the Aether. You are a Keeper. This is Shattered Aether.
