2020 in Indie RPGs/Eleanor Hingley/Game: Brinkwood: The Blood of Tyrants

#HotIndieTTRPGs For the indie rpg that caught their interest in 2020, @Magpie_Elle picked Brinkwood: The Blood of Tyrants by @ErikTheBearik

We seem to be in an era of games about resistance and revolution, for all too obvious reasons. I'm excited about 'Brinkwood: The Blood of Tyrants', which Kickstarted this year, because it uses a game system I absolutely love (Forged in the Dark) to tell a story about people fighting back against the literal vampire aristocrats who have oppressed them. It has a system of Masks - powerful playsets that you can apply to your character in the middle of a game. The act of donning a Mask brings with it an oath to perform actions that fit with the Mask's nature. That could mean caring for others, or it could mean instilling terror and committing acts of violence. It's interesting to have a set of mechanics for characters that change from session to session, meaning that you get to explore them through different lenses. What pushes a caring and faithful person to don a Mask of Ruin? How does that affect them, especially when the Mask offers a bargain to act through them more freely? It's an elegant way of exploring the personal costs of a necessary revolution.
