They have come to deliver the village to the Royalist cause and ensure that Prince Rupert, bad old Prince Rupert of the Rhine, can pass through unmolested.
They have a sodden, sealed letter that delivers an ultimatum to this effect.
Yesterday they were fighting at Edgehill, dragoons under Rupert’s efficient and terrible command, but the fearful battle was a draw and the road from Banbury to Birmingham must be cleared of dissent by letter or by fire.
They are very tired.
