XII: INNER DEMONS Playtest Demo $0.00

XII: INNER DEMONS Playtest Demo: $0.00

Publisher: Witch & Craft Games

Demons are real. Parasitic beings only loosely related to the creatures of myth, they feed on suffering, devouring the traumas of the weak and downtrodden. You are the poor soul who has experienced a very special kind of trauma, so special that it’s caught the eye of a truly dangerous enemy, the most monstrous and impossible of their kind. With the help of a ragtag band of lesser demons who certainly don’t have your best interests at heart, or perhaps another human with a kindred soul and no clue what they’re getting into, you have twelve days to confront the suffering that has been plaguing you... or face a very unfortunate end indeed.

XII: INNER DEMONS is an urban survival horror fantasy tabletop role playing game, set in a world much like our own, but with a lurking layer of supernatural predation and nightmare just out of sight. The players take up the roles of either mortal humans, thrust into a deadly game to confront their worst fears or be devoured by a nightmarish, otherworldly threat, or lesser demons working alongside these humans in search of power and to escape the ensuing collateral damage when one of the strongest members of their kind tears its way into the world to devour a human.

With twelve days before an Archdemon rips through the fabric of reality to devour one of the humans (and any unfortunate others who happen to be caught up along the way), it’s up to the players to stop it. To do so, they must hunt down six Seals, anchor-points that have tied themselves to the target human’s greatest traumas and fears, and unravel them before they can pull the Archdemon into reality. But these Seals are guarded by monstrous servants and other demons, eager to stall the players and feast on their delicious fear all the while. It’ll be up to them to either overcome those demons, or face their own and resolve the root of the trauma that powers each seal.

Between the pages, XII: INNER DEMONS  uses a straightforward and flexible 3d10 system, with an emphasis on easy to use abilities and quick and efficient mechanics. Players always roll 3d10 (or sometimes more) and count up the number of dice that have rolled over a target number: The more successes they get, the better they manage to do whatever it is they’re doing. Players can modify these rolls by purchasing Competences (for humans) or Powers (for demons), which allow them to add extra dice to their pool, though they’ll still only ever pick three dice to choose from. These Competences and Powers also give abilities and effects for players to use, from direct information from the GM to extra dice on different rolls to things like shapeshifting, possession, and wanton destructive force. XII is best played with groups of 4-6 players with one player as a GM, though is flexible enough to allow larger or smaller groups easily.

This is an open playtest demo of XII: INNER DEMONS, available for free for anyone interested. We'll be aiming to start a kickstarter for the finalized version of the game soon, complete with a full print run!

The countryside passes by without the least sign of change, accompanied only by the wheels’ monotonous rattle on the rails. Noon has come; relentlessly the sun is blazing down from high above. Welcome to the world of Desperados. Based on the award-winning video game franchise, this classic tabletop RPG aims to combine the best of both worlds: the challenging, tactical encounters of Desperados III and the freedom of choice and immersion one can only achieve with pen and paper.

Dungeonbright $0.00

Dungeonbright: $0.00

Publisher: Sigil Stone Publishing

Dungeonbright is a fantasy rpg toolkit built to accommodate modern osr or “adventure game” play. It's structured to facilitate fast GM adjudication and diegetic mechanics.

Dungeonbright is written by Ben and Jessica Dutter, with art by Lorc, Delapouite, DarkZaitzev, Cathelineau, and Skoll (from game-icons.net).

PRIMER

Short game even shorter:

  • Three abilities (Body, Mind, Spirit)
  • Three "fields" (Combat, Expertise, Magic)
  • Skill system allows you to skip related tasks
  • Mechanics to minimize the amount of rolling
  • Everything is treated as either a check or a save (including combat)
  • Dungeons are corrupted by mythological, wholly capital-E evil darkness
  • Any PC can cast spells, which significantly differ from TSR-era magic (including in-fiction rules for "recharging" failed spells, and all spells being directly related to dungeoneering)

DESIGN GOALS

Dungeonbright’s design goals are:

  • Mechanized GM fiat
  • Completely in-fiction or diegetic
  • Unified and coherent mechanics
  • Rewarding player ingenuity
  • Evocative, flexible characters
  • Content and dungeon compatibility

WHY?

First of all, the game is totally free. Download it, share it, print it out, use it however you'd like (just don't sell it or remove the artist credits). Dungeonbright, first and foremost, is what we want in a "pure" osr game: it's fast, grounded, and easy to play even for beginners. The core systems are all familiar, but there are ways we've mechanized GM fiat and PC competency that we feel are a breath of fresh air.

If you're into games like Maze Rats, Into the Odd, Tunnel Goons, or GLOG, then absolutely check out Dungeonbright (even just to steal ideas from!).

Mermaids After the End $0.00

Mermaids After the End: $0.00

Publisher: ELH

Mermaids After the End (Shortened to MATE or M8) is a narrative-focused tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) meant to guide stories about adventurers called Hunters seeking fortune in the unknown depths of the post-apocalyptic ocean. They are part of a transhumanist setting that contains some elements of (cosmic) horror. This makes MATE unique in several ways, but especially because underwater settings are something usually avoided in classic TTRPGs such as Dungeons & Dragons.

MATE uses an innovative d12-based system that involves both dice pools and target numbers for outcome resolution. It takes cues from (what I consider) good mechanics in a variety of other TTRPGs and combines them in a way that leads to a fun, easy system to both run and play. It is best enjoyed in a group of 3 to 5 Players, and can be used for either one-shot session or persistent campaigns. All you need is a singular d12!

The signs were always there. The warnings, a plenty. Yet nothing could stop it.

Many millennia ago, in an event called The Melting, Humanity’s home, Terra, underwent a massive global warming event. Some claimed it was due to Humanity’s hubris. Others insisted that it was a natural occurrence, a result of a thirteen-million-year cycle. The truth of the matter did not matter in the end. The sea quickly swallowed the land. Humanity (or at least what survived) was forced onto an ever-shrinking shore. Wars over land and resources were commonplace. Mankind was reduced to tribalism as each grouping fought to keep what was theirs. Those that remained called it “The End of Days.”

…and yet, the true end came from an external source. In their squabbling, Humanity missed a massive comet before it was too late. All they could do was watch and lament as the iceball slammed into Terra. The impact and resulting rise in sea level confined the 10 million or so that survived to the land that used to belong to the seven highest mountain peaks. It took many centuries before the survivors realized that the only hope for Humanity was in coming together instead of squabbling over land and resources. A global initiative was formed to this end, entitled the Atargatis Project. It worked towards the goal of re-expanding Mankind’s foothold on Terra. Specifically, in reclaiming the land which now formed the ocean floor. That meant turning technology inward: in enhancing Human intellect and physiology.

At first, progress on the Atargatis Project was limited. It wasn’t until Professor Durham achieved a breakthrough in cybernetics 250 years ago that things truly began to change. It became possible to encase a Human brain within a protective case, which in turn could be fitted to any number of cyborg bodies. These bodies enabled Humanity to begin building settlements beneath the waves and harvesting what natural resources were now in reach.

This worked for over 200 years before Humanity reached the limits of their newfound continental shelves. By then, what it meant to express one’s self had changed drastically. When one need only swap bodies to don a new “self,” prejudices over things like Race, Gender, Ability, and so forth all but vanished. Not entirely, mind you, but enough that such occurrences were the exception and not the norm. What mattered was in how someone could contribute to society, no matter what that function might be.

The face of politics and social strata changed slowly, but surely. Meanwhile, Humanity continued to push its own boundaries. It became possible to store one’s consciousness in digital form, moving between bodies the same way humans of old might slip into a new pair of clothes. So long as they remained connected to Seanet, the successor to the Internet of old, anyways. Dubbed the Detachment, the advent of this technology drastically changed the “Human Condition.”

It’s been 21 years since the Detachment, also referred to as 21d. Mankind has made great strides in reclaiming their world, yet a vast portion of the ocean remains untouched by human hand. All manner of old knowledge and resources lies within the depths, just waiting to be (re)discovered. Those that find such boons often see themselves elevated socially and politically. One could end up living a simple, idealist lifestyle, if they so chose. And indeed, the allure of such is enough to send many a would-be diver into the dark recesses of the deep.

You are one such individual, a Hunter. You’ve found a collection of comrades who are just as eager as you to “strike it rich,” as they once said. Little do you know what truly lies beneath the ocean for you…

This is a game about finding closure after a broken relationship through remembering good moments and the shared language couples develop. It was designed for "BadTTRPGs Jam 2: The Game Ideas Are Still Bad" and it has three main influences: a BadTTRPGs tweet with the idea of using Dialect for a couple instead of a community, the game Dialect itself (duh!), and the song/video Never Meant by the band American Football.

The idea is as follows: the relationship between two people has been broken recently, and the game is about creating these characters and then coming up with good memories, including the shared language they developed (inside jokes, nicknames, etc). Each memory will reduce their respective bitterness scores until at least one of them reaches zero. That's when the game ends. If both reach zero at the same time, there's a chance they will go back together.

This game needs one 6-sided die, one 10-sided die, and a print-out of the custom cards provided in the document. The prompts and explanations assume a romantic relationship, but are easy to adapt to eg. friendships.

Newtonium Engine Quickstart: $0.00

Publisher: The Black Orifice

Explore a parallel 1754 with superpowers, magic, clockwork robots and demons.

Until a decade ago, magic was so rare and weak that many enlightened thinkers did not believe it existed. That was until the revelation of the magical alloy, Newtonium. Discovered by clockmaker John Harrison, the metal is used to make powerful and intricate clockwork machines that harness its power.

The greatest amongst Harrison's creations are the Newtonium Motors: four clockwork devices that graft onto human organs, allowing them to channel magical energies. They enhance mind and body, giving the Augmented control over one of the classical elements, and empowering their magical rituals. However, this power comes at a cost, twisting the subject's personality to feed the desires of their element.

Take on the role of one of these Augmented heroes and enter a world of intrigue, politics and military ambitions; fighting against dark magics and clockwork technologies that threaten to tear apart a world teetering on the brink of a global war.

Written by Ben Redmond, co-creator of ENnie nominated Etherscope.

This is a quickstart rules version of the game that comes with a ready-to-run adventure, four pre-generated characters and all the rules you need to get playing!

This is a GM-less game for 2-5 players about discovery, adventure, and conflict. It uses two hexagonal maps to create a fictional settlement in the past, and its current state in the present, as the players explore it and try to find treasure among its ruins.

The players choose among four different character archetypes ("The first timer", "The jaded veteran", "The desperate", and "The obsessive") and then switch back-and-forth between the past, defining the settlement, the people who used it, and its buildings and paths; and the present, exploring which structures are still in place, which ones have valuable items, etc. During the whole story, two scores will increase: treasure and tension. If the first one reaches 10 first, the characters will get all the treasure they can carry and will successfully leave the settlement. If the second reaches 10 first, the characters will perish among the ruins that promised to make them rich…

WITCH DOCTORS | Playtest Edition $0.00

WITCH DOCTORS | Playtest Edition: $0.00

Publisher: Curious Monk

You are a Witch Doctor.

Born awoke. Aware. Sensitive to the invisible forces that bind the rest of humanity, constricting their ideas, their beliefs, their very actions.

From time to time, these forces are hijacked by those with knowledge of magick, reencoding the information that permeates human minds and the laws of reality for the betterment of some – at the expense of all others.

When this happens, Witch Doctors are compelled – through some drive that they hardly understand – to step apart from the mundane lives they lead, examine the mess in magick’s wake, and discover the source of the destruction.

To bring it to an end. To defend those without defenses.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WITCH DOCTORS is a modern fantasy tabletop roleplaying game in which Players will create their own Witch Doctors and dive into Mysteries at the heart of pain and suffering that others have no rationale or ability to pursue. Leveraging their wits, their resources, and their innate understanding of magick’s grimoire, they will follow the clues and ultimately identify the source of the trouble. Whether they can set it right is a question; whether they end it is another. For magick in the world of WITCH DOCTORS often leaves no easy exits.

Contained in this download is the public Playtest Edition of the WITCH DOCTORS Tabletop RPG. Within its pages, you will learn how to portray a Witch Doctor as a Player, as well as how to build Mysteries in the role of Guide. The interplay between these two roles is explored quite heavily as well, providing concepts and themes that enable all participants to manage the game's mechanics and evolving fiction with relative ease.

WITCH DOCTORS operates on a new system called Witchcraft, an unholy love-child of our own Aperture System and the Apocalypse System by Vincent & Meguey Baker… with a dash of GUMSHOE by Robin Laws thrown in as well.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WITCH DOCTORS will be launching on Kickstarter in late 2020. By downloading this Playtest Edition and providing your opinion, either via a review or by taking a short survey located at our homepage, you are contributing towards making the game all it can be. Expect updates in the future as we respond to feedback from others like you.
