The Great Gatsby: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game [$5.00]

The Great Gatsby: The Tabletop Roleplaying Game [$5.00]:

urClFO.png

On January 1st, 2021, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, widely considered one of the all time greatest works of American literature, entered the public domain. In this game, you and a group of friends play as a group of public domain characters who find themselves in the world of The Great Gatsby. Will you be able to prevent the death of Myrtle? Can you solve the mystery of what Dr. T.J. Eckleburg’s billboard means? Will Gatsby and Nick finally get to kiss? Will you beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past? The only way to find out is to play!

This game, for several players and a GM, will require one or more six sided dice, and a pen and paper may be useful as well. You might also want to have a copy of the novel on hand, but a six page summary of the events of each chapter is included as well. The game is 10 pages long as a whole. 2 PDFs are included, one with the full game, and one with only the first page, which is all that should be shown to players.

In order to download this game you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of $5 USD. You will get access to the following files:

MATERIALSStickinessPaper & penCutting toolSETUP (GROUP)Gather players.Print out the PDF.(You don't have to print it.)Cut the paper into big strips of equal size.On each strip, write a character archetype in large letters.Fold each strip in half down the middle (so the writing is inside).TO BEGIN, CONTINUE, AND END GAMEPLAY, EACH INDIVIDUAL PLAYER MUST COMPLY:Draw one strip and then, without looking, unfold it and affix it to your forehead.Use the fold to make sure the writing side faces out. Players can assist other players with right-side-upness.Silently read all other players' character archetypes. Engage in improvisational roleplay as your own character archetype. For any skill-and/or-luck-based task, is the player whose character is attempting it in-character in doing so? All other players vote.

The game ends when you're done. You're all winners, except if you TOLD SOMEONE WHAT THEIR CHARACTER ARCHETYPE IS. If you did that, you lost.

Instead of drawing slips at random, players can- write the archetype for the player to their left- write the archetype for the player to their right- write the archetype for the player across from them

All players should do the same or it will get confusing.

Instead of playing in-person with names hidden on slips of paper, players can play using Discord by setting their own server nicknames to randomly-assigned character archetypes enciphered using rot-13 or a similar cipher unknown but accessible to all playing. Then players can decipher all names but their own and add a Note to the profile of each other user about that.

(Before purchasing, please note that the PDF download is literally a blank PDF and all game rules are contained here in this description.)

Solipsism [Free]

Solipsism [Free]:

This is a tool for solo roleplaying.

Solipsism is a collection of blank lists. You fill the lists with people, places, and things from your RPG. Everything you write down is secretly entangled into a puzzle. Locations are connected in different ways. Characters and objects are hidden. At each location you are given a choice of paths to follow. When you follow a path, a piece of the puzzle is revealed, then you receive another set of choices. Clues, dead ends, and a few surprises are included along the way.

In other words, you pick anything you want from your RPG, and Solipsism secretly weaves it into a unique game for you.

Robo Fellas [$1.00]

Robo Fellas [$1.00]: by @greysonwhy

Not a blatant rip-off of Mecha Dudes. Actually, I think* the "creator" of that game might have gone back in time to steal my idea. Because no one has even put robots or space in tabletop RPGs before. Someone please fix the timeline.

Also, buy this game instead. That other guy is like a millionaire* or something.

No, I didn't playtest this. I don't need to. I'm probably one of the best game designers ever. And, no, I didn't submit this to the Art Is Ego jam. It's over and I only just had this maybe completely original idea very recently.

The $50 Edition doesn't say that it's not the $50 Edition. That's it.

*I have absolutely zero proof of this. Nothing I say is libel**.

**That may or may not be how libel works.

Santa's Security: Beta Squad [Free]

Santa's Security: Beta Squad [Free]:

Christmas is over, the boss and his lady are off on vacation. The expectation is that the danger of incursions against the North Pole Christmas Complex falls off after the holiday, but not this year.

There is always a security team, and you are the Beta Team, on alert during the downtime.

There are just two important things to know:

  1. You are part of an elite team of workshop-security professional fey.
  2. You are as festive as the summer days are long.

This is a hack of Grant Howitt's Honey Heist. It is a goofy, holiday-themed game where the players defend against a variety of holiday ne'er-do-wells who just couldn't get their act together before Christmas.

This game does contain dark themes, so be mindful of your own comfort. In addition, this game uses candles as a mechanic. Expedition to Danger Island [Free]

Expedition to Danger Island [Free]: by @trollishdelver

Expedition to Danger Island is a one-page adventure game for 3 or more players. Players become explorers on a randomly generated island where pretty much anything is possible.

Inspired by books like Pellucidar, The Lost World and The Land that Time Forgot, Expedition to Danger Island is meant for one-shot play, but it will never be the same experience twice. One game a group of scientists will be facing hordes of telepathic lizard people riding giant moles, on an island that rains acid, and the next they're a bunch of vacationing teenagers who stumble across a war between cyber demons and dinosaurs.

The island holds its secrets. Perhaps it's an abandoned prisoner of war camp, or maybe even a reality TV show.

The game uses a simple d6 system and features fast-flowing combat.

This is a very freeform and streamlined RPG ruleset, inspired by the Free Kriegsspiel Revolution and Old School Renaissance movements, based on the most famous old school sci-fi RPG, but intended to be used in any setting or genre. The system is designed to be very flexible and hackable. Hacks are indeed encouraged and welcomed.

Lord Scale's New Year's Ball [Free]

Lord Scale's New Year's Ball [Free]:

y43yRm.png

Another year has come and gone, and the mysterious Lord Scale is holding his traditional New Year’s Ball. Important nobles from the Great Houses have been invited, as well several powerful figures from distant lands. These folks gather to enjoy themselves with an evening of luxury, social maneuvering, amazing spectacle. The conversations on the dance floor can forge alliances or enemies that impact the fates of those involved, for better or worse. This is a night where destiny is up for grabs, and choices will leave their mark upon your story.

This year, the leader of the Orange Sky Runners, a skilled group of thieves, has cheated her way into an invitation, hoping to steal a powerful artifact from within the Lord’s manor. Each of the folks coming along with her to the Ball (willing or otherwise) has their own reasons to be there, and their own plans for the artifact she is looking for.

A game thrown together for The Last RPG Jam. The idea of the jam was to be a nice chill experience, but I didn't find out about it until half way through the month and couldn't muster the motivation to make this until five days before the deadline. Even then, I'm proud of how this turned out, and I'll be going back and refining and improving this (especially visually, but I'd like to add another character, more NPCs, and balance out the rules with some testing).

You made the long journey to the Lands of Shadow, to slay the Bone King. Now the dark lord lies dead - but no eagles will come to fly you home. Instead, you must retrace the steps you took, and take the long way home.

In The Long Way Home, you create the journey back from the Lands of Shadow, one step at a time. You create the memories and scars you picked up on the way out - and perhaps pick up more. You'll see how the world has changed because of your actions, and you may still have opportunities to liberate dark places from evil. As you travel, your encounters are bracketed by fireside conversations where we learn more about your characters and how they have changed.

The Long Way Home was created for Refraction Jam 2020, and was built on the game seeds There Are Other Worlds Than These, The Road Goes Ever On, and Bury Me In Starlight.

A(nother) take on vampires using the Lasers & Feelings concept. Like Shades of Light and Dark, this game makes use of a "sliding" number to track internal consequences of the characters' behaviors. You don't really "level up" in this one - the bias of experience tends toward destruction.

If you're not already familiar with vampire mythos, this one probably is not for you.

If you're comfortable with bloodsucker tropes, think particularly of Being Human. Your characters want to balance "normalcy" with their paranormal unlives. Good luck!

Off The Grid [$12.00]

Off The Grid [$12.00]: by @arnivold

Introducing my debut TTRPG, Off The Grid! A game of fighting an oppressive government with wicked parkour moves and gunplay.  Heavily inspired by the video game Mirror's Edge, this TTRPG is meant to emulate the quick-thinking and on-the-fly action of doing clandestine missions in a bustling cityscape as Couriers working for a revolutionary group. In Off The Grid, you will:

  • Evade, fight, and outwit enemy forces
  • Roll a single d10 to resolve mechanics quickly
  • Make fast, on-the-fly decisions as your characters do with a timed turn mechanic
  • Go up against (or completely avoid!) corrupt police, crooked private security, and oppressive military agents
  • Draw upon your characters' personal Drives that act as reset buttons when things go horribly wrong
  • Hang out with and support your fellow Couriers after a job well done

Race from rooftop to rooftop and take down the Lemniscate Group!

General Content Warning: This game at base contains themes of and mentions of oppression, surveillance, police, guns, violence, and death. There is also speculative fiction that talks about real-world issues that might make some readers uncomfortable to imagine or play with. TTRPG safety tools are detailed within this game and their use is highly encouraged.

Timespell [$5.00]

Timespell [$5.00]:

CSFy2a.png

In Timespell, you play elite agents fighting a multi-dimensional Time War originating from an Apotheosis, one of the successful and powerful paradigms at the singularity apexs of the timelines. Each Apotheosis wants its ideals to reign supreme up and down the timestream.

You serve on diverse missions to twist and wrestle the time currents to your end. Sometimes you warp in fifteen minutes early to lay waste to two entire advanced orbital battle fleets, bringing cruisers crashing to devastate the planet below, ending a space empire. Other times you infiltrate for the purpose of removing one specific linchpin around which a history evolves: a doctor who develops a necessary vaccine; the anarchist who starts a war. And sometimes you find yourself embedded for a lifetime, subtly pushing an entire people to change to achieve the goals of your Apotheosis.

But—you have a problem.

You might be falling in love with an agent on the other side. You have been receiving letters from them, hidden in sabotaged missions.

###

In Timespell, 2-5 players are agents falling in love with other agents in a time war, and one player is the Weaver, a GM-like guide and watcher. Gameplay follows scenes of each agent's deployment to win a moment in time sabotaged by another agent who is leaving a message. The messages increase in emotional intensity until one agent falls in love with another, and then they all try to escape the war.

From the depths of time

Timespell is a deep appreciation of This Is How You Lose the Time War, a science fiction epistolary novel by Amal el-Mohtar and Max Gladstone wrapped in the beautiful poetry of the tabletop roleplaying game Wolfspell by Epidiah Ravachol, found at www.WorldsWithoutMaster.com. Both are advanced pieces of technology stolen from the future and brought back in time and I highly recommend them.

This is a first draft of the game currently in playtest. If you do download and try it out, my heartfelt thanks! I'd love your feedback. Your support means I can polish it up.

Whale Burial [Free]

Whale Burial [Free]: @crowkingart

Whale Burial is a setting agnostic point-buy system designed to streamline the more complex aspects common in power systems that will allow players and Game Masters the most freedom possible. In certain systems character creation can feel restrictive and antagonistic to both the player and GM, this is because the mechanics of the game inform the fiction, but Whale Burial is driven by the fiction informing the mechanics. The difference between a flaming greataxe and the swipe of a werewolf’s claw is simply the fact that you and your friends have agreed upon one truth over the other. Mechanically these two powers could be identical, but what matters is the fiction you’ve agreed to take part in, and Whale Burial’s mechanics are designed to help bring that fiction to life.  All conflicts in Whale Burial can be solved by rolling 2d6, adding the appropriate modifier, and meeting or exceeding the Target Number.

ORBITAL [$12.00]

ORBITAL [$12.00]: by @mouseholepress
This game is in development! Lots more content, including a nice actual game book and a bangin' soundtrack, will be following in 2021. I'll have more information to share about physical copies for general sale when the Kickstarter backers have their copies.

ORBITAL gives us airlocks and control panels, pensive faces looking out into the cosmos, improvised fixes for critical systems, military-sponsored subterfuge, warm embraces in the cold vacuum, frantic struggles in zero-gravity and unknowable ancient technology, asking WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT?

Cover art for ORBITAL, by turbo.torbo, showing a space station with 'ORBITAL' written down the side.

Imagine an all-consuming interstellar war, spread across a vast galaxy and involving trillions of willing and conscripted participants. Then imagine a lone space station, floating in the cosmos, that is somehow set apart from this conflict.

Through significant effort and fortuitous circumstance this place has remained unaffiliated and relatively peaceful, providing a sanctuary for the lovers and thinkers who refuse to side with the two warring powers.

A quote from Mobile Suit Gundam 0079: 'This is only the beginning of our war. We have been putting more and more money into our efforts towards making our military stronger than ever. The Federation has done the same. Many of your fathers and brothers have perished valiantly in the face of a contemptible enemy. We must never forget what the Federation has done to our people!

But this hard-won neutrality is not secure, not even slightly. There’s always someone offering vital resources in exchange for a little influence, or plotting to displace our leaders, or smuggling military equipment into forgotten corners of the station.

Holding off these myriad threats is an informal network of dependable sorts, each with a stake in the continuing vitality of the station. These characters; politicos, artisans, brokers and so on, may not be officially recognised leaders—but their influence is felt strongly across the community.

They might not get along — they might not even like each other. But they are united by their belief that the station is a cherished place that must be protected. The question is: when the pressure is rising, can they put their differences & personal motivations aside for the good of the community?

NO BUT LIKE, WHAT IS ORBITAL?

ORBITAL employs the No Dice, No Masters system, utilising the core structure & mechanics from the wonderful Dream Askew by Avery Alder. This means two main things:

  •  There are no dice —players use tokens when they want their characters to take action, making 'moves'. Strong moves, which show the character at their best, require a token to be spent. Weak moves, which show the character's flaws or worst impulses, earn you a token. These tokens help you to weave dramatic arcs for your characters with far more control and simplicity than capricious dice, and make it easy for just about anyone to jump in and start playing.
  •  There are no masters—each player controls both a character and a share of the role of game master, taking responsibility for all of the NPCs and narrative pressures within one aspect of the setting (for example, THE INTERSTELLAR WAR or THE SCUM & VILLAINY). It's more like you're all taking turns playing the antagonists & introducing complications, rather than playing a game entirely without a GM.

Also drawing from Dream Askew, ORBITAL is a game of Belonging Outside Belonging. This means it focuses on stories on marginalised, precarious communities working to live independently from a dominant culture.

A slice of chapter art, by turbo.torbo, showing a person looking out an observation window at ships manoeuvring in space.

Like many of our favourite role-playing games, ORBITAL begins with everyone sitting down to make their characters. You’ll each choose from six CHARACTER ROLES—archetypes that help you create a distinctive main character. You’ll each also choose & personalise one of six SETTING ELEMENTS—aspects of the game world that can introduce challenges and complicate your character’s lives. Filling the two sheets out is quick, fun, and will generate a messy web of story threads to start mulling over.

A quote from Star Trek: Deep Space 9: 'Let me tell you something about hu-mons, nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don't believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

Finally, you'll work together to create your STATION. This place, unique to your table, will be a hopeful space that is struggling against pressures both within and without. You'll think about what it looks like, how it's structured, and choose a few things that are frequent sources of strife within the community. You'll also choose one pressing threat — a perilous event that threatens to light a spark to all the powder built up within your ragtag, turbulent space station.

As you start to explore these threats, you’ll ask questions which will lead to scenes between characters, using your various moves to shape the narrative in material, concrete directions. You’ll bargain and gossip, analyse and manage, love and celebrate, struggle and fight, and all the rest.

Ultimately, through play, you’ll decide the fate of your community and the station as equal storytellers in your own unique tale.

You can play a satisfying one-shot in 3-4 hours, or play through a series of sessions to explore your station further and further complicate your character's relationships. It can be played with up to 6 players, and will also includes rules for playing with a GM and 1-4 players when fully released.

Artifacts (Found) in a Lonely Room [Free]: by @rosequartzklein

Created in a single day for the #NoNoNoJam. (Will be updated later with art)

2-5 players (or maybe 6, let us know!)1 hour, probably... maybe (I definitely haven't playtested this yet)I'm not going to lie to you and say that this game will make you feel warm and fuzzy. It won't. But... It will definitely inspire some interesting stories,  cause moments of reflection, and create some deep and complex characters (and artifacts).

There are a number of stories — books, movies, games, and more — that center around people and their artifacts. This is the beginning (or end) of all of those stories, told from a different perspective.

Anyway, I hope you... enjoy it? As with any RPG, there's a reason we play with friends.

Fruit RPG [Free]

Fruit RPG [Free]: by @PlayGlittercats

Fruit RPG is a "No GMs, No Settings, No Campaigns" game. The heart of the game is a card oracle that determines the fruit, or outcome, of each character's involvement in each scene. Players begin the scene knowing what the fruit of the scene will be for their character, and play toward achieving that end. Players trade cards to find more suitable fruits for their characters.

This is version 0.1. It should be playable, but it's extremely bare bones. The file will be updated with more guidelines for play, better layout, and some sample playsets. Planned playsets include Harrisville Apple Festival and South Ave. Cat Rescue.
