What was the RPG Pipeline

The RPG Pipeline was a posting board to keep track of upcoming tabletop rpgs from 2015 to 2021 (this Blogger version began in 2019). It covered new English language ttrpgs and ttrpgs going into crowdfunding.

Consensus | Together [Free]

Consensus | Together [Free]:

Consensus | Together is a pair of one-page narrative roleplaying games about a group of people working together to do something about the state of the world, and the importance of the rules that guide our interactions. Using an identical setup and facing the same challenges, each game has subtle variations in its mechanics and framing. These differences implicitly showcase two very different visions of what it means to work together using consensus-based decision making processes. As they play, players can use the rules to improve the game itself, provided of course that they can come to a consensus about how to do so.

Work together (or don’t) to discuss proposals on the agenda as you define and then work to achieve your goals. Will you desperately try to patch the broken process before everyone has Something Better to Do? Or will you revel in the chaos, embracing your personal hidden agenda as you gather information, build solidarity and enforce the rules through judicious use of Points of Order?

Consensus | Together is both a satirical game and an educational one, teaching people about making both decisions and games at the same time. Consensus sharply parodies elaborate consensus-for-its-own-sake cargo culting and explores the consequences of subtly terrible rules by demonstration. After your group decides this has gone on long enough, check out Together for a breath of fresh air. As you work together to make a difference, explore how good rules and structure can help keep you focused on the things that matter and resolve your disagreements.

If you found it useful, distressingly familiar, or even fun, please pass it along or stick it in your zines, in the hopes that our organizations in the real world can look more like Together, and less like Consensus.

Dhextiny [$3.00]

Dhextiny [$3.00]:

2LhqwA.jpg

Dhextiny uses a variable success and failure mechanism that provides varied results and outcomes in game actions, as opposed to the usual binary result systems seen in most tabletop role-playing systems.

To determine results in the game, a combination of a shared hexagonal board, called the Dhextiny, is used together with a single six-sided die.

There’s a Dhextiny board included at the end of this document that can be printed for your use. However, if you cannot print the board, you can easily create one from a simple piece of paper and pencil, following its very basic design. You will also need a single token to keep track of where you are in terms of results on the Dhextiny board; again, for this you can use anything like another die, a coin, or even a simple cut-out piece of paper.

This has been designed as a generic system. As such, feel free to build upon it and create your own settings, worlds, and expansions over these basic rules.

Under The Floorboards [$10.00]

Under The Floorboards [$10.00]:

Under The Floorboards is a tabletop roleplaying game for 2-5 players about tiny people living in a giant, hostile world, inspired by The Borrowers. The focus of the game is very story-driven, with an emphasis on collaborative storytelling and worldbuilding over stats and crunch.

Build your family and the house in which they live, then embark on an expedition into the land of giants in order to collect the things you need to survive - without being seen.

The game uses a simple 2d6 system for conflict resolution and an easy-to-pick-up story-building system to help GMs build engaging scenes on the fly.

Under The Floorboards is a low-prep game designed for one shot play but with tools to enable campaign play over multiple sessions. The game provides locations, hazards, and tools to quickly design your own content to keep surprising your players, and is perfect for convention play or to keep on your shelf for game nights when your whole group can't be there.

Under The Floorboards was funded as part of ZineQuest 2.

Tavern at the End of the World [$3.00]

Tavern at the End of the World [$3.00]:

YfJ40O.png

Tavern. Publichouse. There are a lot of words for the thing you run. The one you like these days, as occupiers’ boots tramp through your streets, is refuge. You offer a hard drink, a good meal, somewhere to hide. And other, more slippery things. Until they shut you down.

TAVERN AT THE END OF THE WORLD is a journaling role-playing game for one player. It requires a tarot deck and can be played in half an hour or more. And it fits on one printed page.

The city is under occupation. You keep your establishment afloat by serving this embattled community. But if you want to continue to do it, you'll need to stay off the occupying forces' radar.

Receive visitors to your establishment. Turn over a tarot card and use the game prompts to help decide who comes calling and what they're looking for. A drink, a hot meal, a secret meeting to ferment revolution.

But keep a low profile. Throw coins to find out what kind of heat your visitor brings down on you. What kind of action are you willing to take to keep the occupiers away from your doorstep?

Write in your journal. But be sure to hide any illegal activity behind coded language or euphemism. If your establishment gets raided, your journal could be seized as evidence against you.

One of our city’s new protectors stopped in for a nightcap, but objected to sharing the bar with refugees. Once he tasted the drink I mixed up special for him, though, he quieted down immediately.

Designed & written by Anna Anthropy and  illustrated by Rayne Klar. Shout out to Sharang Biswas for coming up with the name. The tarot deck in the photo is the Tarot of Pagan Cats.

Tavern at the End of the World is a Princess Sword game, and is based on my other game Princess with a Cursed Sword.

Inscrutable Cities [$5.00]

Inscrutable Cities [$5.00]:

LyiOVf.png

It requires no cards, dice, or tokens, and falls somewhere between "lyric table-top role play," "interactive fanfiction," and "guided meditation from an alternate universe." It is designed to be suitable for both solo play and with a group, in person or remote. The shortest possible complete play-through takes about half an hour.

A Note on the Source Material

This game is inspired by, and in response to, the works of Italo Calvino, primarily but not exclusively Invisible Cities. It's intended as a submission to "If on a summer's night a game designer...", a Calvino-themed game jam that runs from the summer solstice to the fall equinox, and as such, will be completed no later than the end of that jam. Without getting too into the weeds here, my conceptual goal is to allow players to re-experience the awe and mystery of the worlds Calvino so meticulously built in language, without his unrelenting fixation on women's bodies, among other things that sour a lot of his fiction for me.

Q & A:

Why are you selling it now if it isn't done yet?

I am presently, for lack of a better phrase, a "full-time writer" (unemployed), so pre-orders very directly support the time and resources needed to fully develop the project.

What steps are involved in this project's completion?

In addition to finishing and revising the writing and testing the  game play, I'm also:

  • Designing the cover art in both full color and printer-friendly black and white.
  • Designing and typesetting the interior layout in both full color and printer-friendly black and white.
  • Designing and testing an html version with dyslexia-friendly font, screen-reader-friendly markup, and colorblind-friendly palette.
Some things I would also love to do, were resources no object, but which are only really possible past a certain threshold of support:

  • Make the eventual release totally free, very cheap, or by suggested donation.
  • A custom in-browser randomizer that will pick outcomes for you if you're feeling indecisive or want to add dice-roll style suspense into your session.
  • Physical zine copies with cute paper and everything. Ah, the dream...

What does "pre-order" mean? Why is it listed as a download? Where's the file?

Itch's pre-order function works like most pre-orders, allowing you to support a project financially upfront and entitling you to the completed version as soon as it's released. The Itch-specific quirk here is that, for some reason beyond my understanding, it's labeled as a type of download, even though there is no file on the other end (yet). When the project is released, you will automatically have access to the complete version.

You can, in the meantime, download the character creator sheets as a free demo! These, I've heard, are fun on their own but will also give you an idea of the overall aesthetic and play mechanics of the game.
In order to download this game you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of $5 USD. You will get access to the following files when they are released:

God Remains [$5.00]

God Remains [$5.00]:

God Remains

The Omnigod was everything. He gave and he took away. With his face of glory he conferred forgiveness, with his face of evil he conferred punishment, with his face of wisdom he conferred enlightenment, but truth was always one step away.

Now he's dead. You rebelled and killed him. Now you're free.

Now, only god remains.

This is a game about building a home out of the remains of a fallen god. You will play as members of the People, who look after their peers and carve spaces to turn the God Head into a home while facing the void of space and the threat of bodily decay.

If you're familiar with Power by the Apocalypse games, this might be a little different from what you're used to, but you'll figure it out right away.  It’s inspired on turn-based strategy games over your traditional epic tales of adventure.

Debt Is Only The Beginning [Free]

Debt Is Only The Beginning [Free]:

M55tS%2B.jpg

The classic image of a mage is a wealthy scholar, usually male, sequestered away in an ivory tower. Surrounded by books, familiars, and strange instruments of all sorts, he is content to perform his experiments and work his rituals in pleasant solitude, knowing that the outside world will never intrude on what is truly important.

Would that you could have that. Ivory towers don’t come cheap nowadays. You’ve maybe heard of a friend of a friend who crashes on his uber-rich friend’s ivory-colored silk couches, but you couldn’t afford so much of a swatch of the couch fabric, let alone the penthouse in which the couch sits. There are still some mages in the one percent. You’re not one of them. The best you can do is throw yourself on their tender mercies.

Maybe you’re an apprentice. Maybe you’re running from something, or someone. Maybe you just needed a cheap spot to crash until you can finish school in the city. For whatever reason, you found yourself signing your soul away on this lease to one of the fat cat casters. It’s not too bad, you have hot water and a bed of your own and maybe even a kitchen. It’s within your price range, which is a miracle. Good thing, too; if you don’t make rent by the end of the year, it’s gonna be your ass handed over to the Goetia or the Faerie Courts or whoever’s weird sigil was on the contract you signed.

But hey, you’ve dealt with worse, right?

Debt is Only The Beginning is a rules-light tabletop dealing with magic and uncertain living situations, and was originally published for Avery Alder's Rentpunk Game Jam. It will always be PWYW.

Wickies [$5.00]

Wickies [$5.00]:

dL1%2FLC.jpg

You are wickies, both of you, light-keepers employed by the United States Light-House Establishment. Your job is to tend to a lighthouse far off the coast, and make sure the light is lit every night.

You have both been brought to this barren rock on a tender ship, to serve your four-week stint before you are relieved.

You are neither of you strangers to hard work, but the days and nights do take their toll. As the weeks go by, will you keep it together or will you turn on each other? What lies beneath the waves? What strange power does the lighthouse hold? What secrets do you keep from each other?

Wickies is a 2-player GM-less rpg based on the Wretched and Alone rules by Chris Bissette and Matt Sanders. You take on the roles of lighthouse keepers, one of you will be the older Keeper, who is in charge, and one of you will be the younger Assistant.

Wickies is available as a A5-size zine of 20 pages.

Lost Emblem Saga [Free]

Lost Emblem Saga [Free]:

Lost Emblem Saga is a rules-light fantasy minirpg that's built off of the same framework as Nine Black Jewel Moons, and -- alas! -- grew far too big for any pocketmod, so I decided to try my hand at a quarter-page-sized zine instead :D

It's also a homage to a certain long-running strategy rpg that likes its fires and emblem, at least as far as flavours and tropes go.  I've made some tweaks here and there, ha.  LES even comes with its own mini-setting, an overview of the continent of Illone.

Hopefully even if the bones of the beastie aren't to one's taste, there may be a bit of the meat on it to your liking.  Enjoy ~

Spoken in the Dark [$3.00]:

Words have power.

When you learn new languages you look at the world anew.

When you look at the world with new eyes you realise you can change it.

But you can't do it alone.

You play two people on a new world, plucked from your life and home. Neither of you speak the other's language fluently, but in the process of learning it you discover, with these new words, you can change this world and maybe one day get home.

A game for those of you who, like me, cannot learn alone.

Spoken in the Dark is a prompt based 2 or more player game using the Forged in the Dark dice system to enhance your language practice.

This is an early version of the game to see if there is interest. Future development plans include more moves, playbooks, translations, and art.

Purchasing the book at this price will provide you with access to all future developments to the game for free. The price may change later, but it will not affect those of you who have already purchased a copy.
