Conversations over Coffee [Free]

Conversations over Coffee [Free]:

Created for Yuri R's Mock Cover Jam 2021.

All credit goes to Yuri R for the cover-art which forms the core of the jam.

Yuri created this decaying, overgrown caffeinated scene. Naturally, my thoughts sprang to Death.

This is a game about gods of Death appealing to the souls of mortals to join them in their specific afterlives. Gods need these souls as much as mortals need gods.

It's a game for two or three players, and you'll need a d6, a d20 and maybe some note-cards. It's a mechanics-light roleplaying game.

Have you ever looked at a mirror, and felt like something was looking back? Maybe it was just a trick of the light… or maybe not.

This game is a work in progress! Please send me any feedback if you play it.

What if...? [Free]

What if...? [Free]:

What if Bilbo never found the Ring? What if Ellen Ripley got stuck on LV-426? What if Indiana Jones found the way to Hollow Earth…? ”What if…?” The most powerful question of them all. Let your mind wander and create the epic adventure only YOU dare to imagine!

A short, rules-ultra-light RPG for my high-school students to recycle new vocabulary with. You need one GM and at least one Player but I intend to play it with up to 3 Players. They only need a d20. The point is not tactical combat simulation but telling a cool story with friends and working on fluency. Feedback welcome ;-)! Happy gaming, JP!

Ark Frontier [Free]

Ark Frontier [Free]:

This is an early prototype of a game I'm working on. I've not gotten very far with it, but I'm hoping to get some feedback and all.

One of the big ideas I had for this system was that all PCs were proficient in multiple weapons and could switch between them for various effects, like a Devil May Cry or SaGa character.  The setting is mainly inspired by Sci-Fi JRPGs and the like.  There's not many details on the setting right now because I'm currently mainly working on the mechanics, but I hope it seems interesting!

I have a Discord for playtesting, located here.

Cover image is a Creative Commons 2.0 placeholder, called Cradle of Stars by Scott Cresswell.  I got it from here.

Domains of Shadow [Free]

Domains of Shadow [Free]:

l5Yq5R.jpeg

Domains of Shadow is a project that is still in-development! The Guidebook here does not represent the final document. The project will be completed in August of 2021. Domains of Shadow is a GMless storygame of Gothic Horror and Shakespearean Tragedy. It is the first roleplaying system that is specially designed to tell stories that would be presented as actual play performances to an outside audience. Because of this, Domains of Shadow is focused on dramatic effect, smooth pacing, and streamlined rules.

There are two elements at the foundation of Domains of Shadow. The first is a non-continous story structure consisting of multiple distinct scenes where the role of creating the introductions to scenes rotates between players. The second is the Blight, which represents the influence of the Otherworld on the human mind, and the way that it drives people to their loss of composure and possible tragic downfall by promising them inner strength and dark occult power.

The Guidebook and Character Sheet to Domains of Shadow is provided here. It is free to download, share, and use any of these documents.

If you are interested in playing this system, then join the Domains of Shadow Discord Server (https://discord.gg/mv2gEFpWNM). Almost every week I organize a one-shot story session, with a schedule negotiated by the table and scenario tailored to their preferred story interests.

Amal [$10.00]

That’s what you were hired to do: get Amal out. You were offered everything they had, even if it looked like loose change. They didn’t care about anything other than getting Amal to safety.
The job is to rescue their hero. The woman who saved them needs to be saved.
Before she’s locked up in Falconer’s Ridge, you need to get her to St Anne’s Beach near Blackpool on the right day at the right time.

Amal is the Quick Start Game for Beta Maxx Theft, a pulp heist RPG.

Included in this document is a heavily cut back version of the Beta Maxx Theft Rules followed by a roughly 3hour long module with handouts.

Crime Idiots [Free]:

Crime Idiots is a one-page RPG of poorly-planned and hilariously-executed heists. With simple, dice-optional rules that reward fun, this game is great for veteran role-players and initiates alike.

The Basics:
Criminals have no stats, only Crime Bucks. We all know this. Spend Crime Bucks to complete actions that could aid your criminal undertakings. Earn Crime Bucks with idiotic shenanigans that threaten to derail your entire plan! Play as a brilliant mastermind, an unstoppable fighter, an acrobatic burglar, or other archetypes of skullduggery, each with their own special ability!

Only Dogs [Free]

Only Dogs [Free]:

Only Dogs is a 1 page rpg I made in an afternoon because I wanted to game about dogs freeing other dogs from servitude. Its up to you and your pack to work out what that means. You can play it with a spare half hour waiting for people to arrive and 2d6.

While the game is focused on the lives of dogs (either literal or metaphorical) and frames the conversation around anthrochauvinism and anthrocentrism the game is intended as a barebones framework to encourage conversations about the nature of oppression, ethnocentrism and nature vs. nurture.

Its not trying to tell how how to think, just asking you to start.

Four Dr Whos And A Valeyard [Free]

Four Dr Whos And A Valeyard [Free]:

1Y1Qv4.png

In Four Dr Whos And A Valeyard (Who Is Also One Of The Aforementioned Dr Whos), four players play four Dr Whos who team up to save the universe and (more importantly) one-up each other. But gasp, shock, horror! One (or more) among their number is NOT who they say they are! Can these Time Lord, who all happen to be the same person, figure out which of them is... well, also them, but a future version and evil! Or will the universe be doomed, forever?!

This RPG is designed for four players, and it does not require a game master. It is two pages long, and contains some funky illustrations. This game requires one six-sided die (a d6), one twenty-sided die (a d20), paper, and pencils to play.

It's also a hack of Andrew Young's 'Four Sherlock Holmes And A Vampire'. Find the original here and support the creator! - https://thatonegm.itch.io/four-sherlock-holmes-and-a-vampire.

Changeling [Free]

Changeling [Free]:

It’s your final year of high school. Despite everything – unhappy whispers from the townsfolk, cruel pranks from your classmates, cold iron stuffed in your lockers and jackets worn inside-out – you have survived. And more than that, you and your friends have thrived; carving out a place for yourself in this strange world that never wanted you. Only a few more months to go, and you’ll be free of this school and free to explore the rest of the world as you see fit.

Or maybe you won’t.

Because today is when everything changes. The forest is alive with whispers, and there is something waiting in the trees for you. Something that threatens to destroy everything you know and love – if you don’t destroy it first.

A short bare-bones TTRPG game I threw together about a year ago about teenage changelings killing fae beasts together. Needs some serious revamping and work, but I'm putting it up here for posterity.

Gunmetal Sonata [Free]

Gunmetal Sonata [Free]:

%2F6XeUi.png

Gunmetal Sonata is an urban fantasy RPG about monster hunting millennials tracking and slaying threats to humanity through a system that splits between noir investigation and highly-stylized anime action.

Features / Design goals:

  • A stunt-heavy dice-pool driven combat system where all you need is one hit to win, but landing that hit is an extended contest of wits and commitment.
  • Police procedural episodic play loops, where players split up and race against the clock to investigate cases and prepare for inevitable showdowns.
  • Player-facing systems that model stress as PCs navigate a world where caring is hard - but also necessary - for pulling yourself past the finish line.
  • Mechanical crunch and table presence inspired by board game design (abstract strategy, tactile components, play references etc).

Fiction inspirations: Fate/Stay Night, Under Night In Birth, RWBY, Devil May Cry, Arknights.

Game inspirations: Exalted, Dogs in the Vineyard, BattleCON, Exceed, Magic the Gathering.

Behind the Scenes:

Gunsong is a game I plan to take to Kickstarter someday. In service of that, the game text will remain free because I plan on charging for it later down the line. This itch page will be hosting up-to-date playtest documents until things get super commercial.

If you wish to support the game, it desperately needs playtesting.  Even reading it and dropping feedback on read-feel would be a big help - you can find me on my design discord. Alternatively, I also have a patreon.

If you can't read a PDF for whatever reason, the full game text is also available on google docs here. I'll be creating google docs versions for each release besides the PDFs going forward.

Gunmetal Sonata is Powered By The Apocalypse and Forged In The Dark.

Sense & Stencibility [$5.00]

Sense & Stencibility [$5.00]:

Two star-crossed lovers paint murals on the side of the worst Taco Hut in the city. Bitter art rivals fall in love, but are doomed to die. A gallery patron schemes against their star artist, only to see their plan backfire.

Sense & Stencibility is an art-focused RPG about young lovers, fate, and tragedy. Players will create characters and role-play scenes that will be illustrated throughout the setting of their fictional city. Write quotes, deface other players art, make your own stencils, players will use art to communicate the lives of their young artists as they try to avoid tragedies. Players create characters with signature styles, relationships, and fates. The game proceeds through three acts where the characters are introduced, try to avoid their fates, and eventually succumb to the one fate they could not avoid.

Final Night [Free]

Final Night [Free]:

q222pX.png

It's the late 80s or early 90s.

The world is aswarm with masked killers.

Every large enough stretch of territory seems to have at least one. A ghost story returned to grisly relevance. A grudge unfulfilled. A man with a deep basement and silent neighbors.

Society has adjusted to this new age of terror.

But you haven't.

After surviving a brush with a killer, you've become a Final Girl.

And Final Girls can kill them back.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Final Night is a game about hunting B-reel slashers.

You play by pulling from a deck of cards, taking pieces from a tumbling block tower, and optionally by recording your results in a journal.

There is a Content Warning for B-movie violence, somewhat subverted by the change in targets.

Terra Magia [Free]

Terra Magia [Free]:

Terra Magia table top role playing game and is set in a modern fantasy world with spells, swords, shotguns and smartphones. With mechanics that should be familiar to any who have played TTRPGs in past, this core rule book has everything needed to create your own story and explore the world of Terra, fighting off the roving hordes of monstrosities in the wilds, or beating down corrupt corporate heads who have polluted your home. Terra Magia is full of detailed mechanics for the those who love crunchy rules that they can manipulate to break the game.

Terra Magia was made with the intent to let people make their absolutely perfect character. With traditional classes reframed as archetypes that you can freely mix and match perks from to create entirely unique character class. Terra also includes broad spectrum physical mutations that allow you to create your ideal edgy one winged assassin with demon eyes and a wolf's tail. No matter how extra or silly it is you should be allowed to do it and have fun otherwise what is the point of fantasy.

This is currently a work-in-progress, a rough draft that I couldn't wait to share anymore. Updates may not be consistent but they will continue until Terra is complete. I hope any who stumble on to it can have fun with friends creating a truly fantastic story together.

StoryGuider: A TTRPG to play with toddlers! [Free]

StoryGuider: A TTRPG to play with toddlers! [Free]:

hlyfMi.png

StoryGuider is intended to help you make simple stories with your kid(s) so they can get used to tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), decision-making, problem-solving, etc.

It focuses only on the RP side of TTRPGs (there are no dice or rule mechanics).  This is so kids can get used to playing as a character and changing the story without having to simultaneously worry about learning mechanics that they are not familiar with.  It is a stepping stone into playing more rules-based TTRPGs.

The files below include a premade adventure (The Magician's Big Performance) with an example dialogue of how it might play out.  You can use this either as dialogue for your game or to get some ideas for how to describe game details on your own.

The files also include a blank form for you to fill out with your own stories.  Please feel free to use The Magician's Big Performance (or other stories I post) or create your own!

There are also articles on TTRPGkids.com with some additional tips and tricks for this specific type of story set up.  These articles can help with some common issues and developing story-building skills, or please let me know in the comments if you have any questions!

I hope this helps you to introduce TTRPGs to your kid(s) and that you have fun sharing a story and starting a hobby together!

Apocaliplock [Free]

Apocaliplock [Free]:

Your next-door neighbour wandered into the street, calmly detaching piece after piece of herself, until she lay strewn across the road, softly singing.

Everything west of the river is just a montage of photo-realistic flat shapes — as you walk along the bank, you can start to glimpse between and beyond them. Nobody who crosses the bridge has come back.

All the electricity pylons sprouted wings and strutted away like ugly herons, their snapped and writhing cables fraying into showers of grass snakes. The electricity is still working, but if you hold your ear to a wire, you can hear it whispering.

Science has abandoned you, but you still have your wits, your own two hands, and your hot friends.

God of Chores [Free]:

You are a demigod, by birth or selection. You strike out against terrible monsters and challenge the most deadly and overwhelming foes in the name of glory and renown, in hopes of one day attaining godhood yourself.

You have been called to a town to deal with personal matters that have little to do with heroism or divine glory. Your divine patrons have made it known that they expect you to handle yourselves well, lest you be disgraced in the eyes of gods and mortals alike, and that you are not to turn this town into a smoking ruin or to the centre of a new cult to your name...

God of Chores is a one-page RPG adapted from "Nice Marines" by Grant Howitt (who can be found at https://gshowitt.itch.io/). In it, players take on the roles of powerful and legendary demigods trying to handle mundane situations without turning the whole region into a new myth of devastation and glory.
