Dust Bowl Galaxy Rulebook

Dust Bowl Galaxy Rulebook:

Dust Bowl Galaxy Rulebook
Publisher: Lagging Dice LLC

Dust Bowl Galaxy is a space western game of exploration, outlaws and frontier survival.

It is a rules-light low-prep game where you build your starship out of spare parts, crew it with custom made aliens, and go explore the galaxy one randomly (or not so randomly) generated sector at a time. When you blow something up, you weld the leftovers onto your ship, call them upgrades and keep on truckin'.

You are in a tin can with half a dozen other scoundrels and there is literally nothing outside for light years. You are tumbling through a bitter galaxy that used to have a lot more people. You are going where many others have gone before. The trick is surviving to come back.

You are looking for a new rock for your people to call home. And once you find it, the refugees can leave their overcrowded slums to become settlers so you get rich doing the right thing… just this once.

On an unrelated note, you are totally not pirates. “Not in this port, officer.”

This game requires use of playing cards. You may use a couple regular poker decks (and deface them with sharpies), but it is faster to play it with a set of Dust Bowl Galaxy Cards. There are 237 of them in the set, covering all the ship components, gadgets, alien species and their abilities, as well as planets and stars for random galactic sector creation.

This game also requires six-sided dice. About thirty of them will suffice for the whole group. They do not come bundled with the game, but there are many hobby stores that will happily sell you these in a variety of colors and materials.

RISK IT ALL!

Shadows darken and deepen. They’re cast by the enormous, world-striding megacorporations that grasp for power and strangle humanity in their clutches. By 2080, most of the planet has given in—bowing and scraping before their corporate overlords; selling their souls to the almighty nuyen. The corps gotta make a trillion, no matter who dies.

And their reactions set their destiny. They may seek to repair the world’s injustices, or build wealth to keep themselves safe, or just strike a match and watch the world burn.

Regardless of the chosen path, they stand up and survive. They’re called shadowrunners, and they risk everything …

The poison of suspicion

The poison of suspicion:

The poison of suspicion
Publisher: Hardcore Narrativist

This is a two-player game with a pretty specific and focused theme: forgiveness, and what makes life worth living. It's a game about a person who is poisoned and will probably die, and the person who poisoned them. The game plays as a series of scenes, alternating between the two players: the poisoner has scenes about the bad things the victim did and why they deserved to die (the poisoner tries to justify themselves, winning righteousness points), while the victim has scenes about things that made their life worth living (the victim tries to gather willpower to fight the poison and/or find an antidote, winning hope points).

Each game lasts for about one hour and it's pretty easy to play. The mechanics of the game try to show how there are often two sides of the same coin, first by having poisoner and victim show different sides of the victim, and second via a system that sometimes forces the players to introduce a “contrast” in the scene (things were not as good or not as bad as they would like to show them, or as they remembered them). The game has prompts to help you come up with ideas for scenes, although their use is entirely optional.

The Fickle Loom

The Fickle Loom:

The Fickle Loom
Publisher: Mousehole Press

What is The Fickle Loom?

The Fickle Loom is a story game for three players. It's an exploration of the narrative distance that all folklore has travelled, from murky, undocumented inception to adaptation into major motion picture. It’s inspired by audio projects like Lore and Myths & Legends, that examine our favourite stories and their surprising origins.

Folklore is weird. In an early version of Red Riding Hood, there was no Huntsman to save Red and she was served her own grandmother for dinner before the Wolf ate her. In Cinderella, her stepsisters cut off their toes to try and fit into the glass slipper, and they fooled the gallant Prince until he noticed the blood pooling around their feet. Grim.

As a group, you’ll create a folk tale, starting with a basic setup, and playing Scenes to fill in the narrative. Much like our folklore, which is the product of many, often unknown storytellers, you’ll never have complete control over the story. As you play, you’ll increasingly play the role of editors in the retelling of the tale, shaping it to fit your needs. Eventually, you'll turn your weird, grim tale into something fit for children.

What you’ll need to play

  • Three players, including yourself.
  • Twelve six-sided dice.
  • A bunch of index cards, or sheets of paper cut into four pieces. Maybe thirty?
  • Two to three hours of time in a quiet location, with a nice table.
Price: $4.99

Shattered Dawn: The Granite Greataxe Arc
Publisher: Shattered Tabletop Games

Shattered Dawn is a story driven game, where players may create and play their
own characters in an expansive fantasy world. Shattered Dawn is not like other
games, the rules and gameplay have been carefully crafted to be simple, fast-paced
and allow for new players, and veteran players, alike to fully enjoy the lore and
narrative without having to constantly focus on rules.
This is a tabletop role-playing game that is designed to be easy for new people,
but allows for increased complexity based on play style. The gameplay system
challenges the traditional archetypes of character creation and party roles.
Our classless system allows for complete customization of every aspect of your
character and allows characters to learn new things at any point. Shattered Dawn’s
advancement system challenges the meta of party dynamics. Rogues do not have to
wield daggers, mages can wear full plate armor, and berserkers can
unleash a fury of spells.
Shattered Dawn uses a custom d100 based system that focuses on quick combat and rolling to
allow the storytelling to prevail. Many of the games mechanics and system are useful tools to
empower storytelling, rather than storytelling being subject to the rules themselves.

The Granite Greataxe Arc
This Arc takes place in the Age of Resistance, and can be undertaken at any point without any interruption of any major Arc. This Arc has 4 chapters that will lead the players through levels 6-10.

Balance [BETA]

Balance [BETA]:

Balance [BETA]
Publisher: Stormforge Productions

Balance is a fast-paced fantasy RPG that puts you in the shoes of an Agent of Twilight, tasked with restoring the natural order and balance of a world that has lost its way. It sports relatively simple mechanics that you can learn in no time and get ready to play incredibly quickly. It's ideal for groups that want something fast and easy to pick up and get into in order to break up the monotony of a long campaign with something different and fun, as well as for introducing new players to the gentre of tabletop roleplaying games. Staying true to its name, the game is made to be perfectly balanced, so every way to play is not just valid, but it's also the correct strategy for winning, ensuring you can play however YOU want.

Your character is an agent of the Eternal Council - a secret society that serves the great Twilight to preserve the balance in the world. In ALL the worlds. Everything is connected by the layers of the Twilight, and only those that are taught the ancient ways of your order can enter or navigate it. The realm of shadows will be your home, refuge, and base of operations, as you prepare to execute the mission that lays before you. Each class also has a unique relationship with the Twilight. Exploring what that is and how they draw power will not only reveal deep secrets, but it might just be what you need in order for them to realise their full potential.

Balance offers a very simple but open-ended set of mechanics and lots of pre-configured templates with the goal of being easy to get into. The game is incredibly fast paced and made to be played in one-shot adventures that span a few gaming sessions at most. Another one of its unique aspects is that it's not just a 2d6 system, it is THE 2d6 system. Due to how the mechanics are set up and the way the game's balanced, it is governed by incredible consistency - matter what happens, you can be sure that the two dice are all you're ever going to need, and once you get the hand of it, rolling doesn't change.

[OPEN BETA]

Of course, right now the game is in Beta. The core is there, but it's far from polished, and many features are missing. But that's why this Open Beta is here and why we need YOU! Read, download, playtest, and share any and all feedback you have. Stuff you want to see? Things that you didn't want to see in there? Let us know on Twitter or Discord. Brainjackers in the Wageslave

Brainjackers in the Wageslave:

Brainjackers in the Wageslave
Publisher: Eva Brown

You are a Brainjacker, a merc for hire that uses implants on kidnapped Wageslaves to accomplish your mission.

You’re new though, you still have to use the public domain Brainjacking hardware.

So you’ll have some company in there...

Brainjackers in the Wageslave is a competitive mini tabletop role-playing game meant for 3+ players. Players create simple characters and have randomly selected missions with a narrator controlling the action. Only a single 6-sided die is needed to play the game.

The Rules

The Brainjacker

When you are making your Brainjacker the first thing is to come up with your Handle, only the most foolish use their Fleshnames in the Cyb3r-Fronti3r. If you’re at a loss, replace the first and last letters of your name with several Xs, maybe toss in 420 or a 69 at the end as well.

Each Brainjacker has a mission for this operation and it is decided by rolling a 6 sided die and using the list below. Don’t share your mission with the other players.

1 - Kill CTO X

2 - Kidnap CTO X

3 - Protect CTO X

4 - Terrorize CTO X

5 - Interrogate CTO X

6 - Escort CTO X

And finally, you’ll design your Console. Describe how it looks to the other players and then move on to assigning Neural Nodes and Programs.

Neural Nodes are needed for controlling the Wageslave as they boost your budget console’s signal to override other Brainjackers, you start with 20 of them.

Programs are pre-programmed commands that you can run when you have control of the Wageslave, as a freestyle game you should label your software open-ended things like “Precision_Shooting.exe” or “Seduce.bat”. If you encounter a scenario that you don’t have a program for, you can Hack one together but there is a greater chance of failure.

After a Brainjacker completes their mission, that player is the new Narrator.

The Narrator

At the start of the game, the player with the most tech on them is the first Narrator. The Narrator describes the scene and who CTO X is and what X-CORP is and does. The Wageslave starts outside the front doors of X-CORP. They keep track of Escalation and Progress, both start at 0.

Escalation shows the intensity of the scenes. At 0 no one should suspect a thing and play should be easy. As Escalation rises so should the stakes, when Escalation reaches 6 the Wageslave either dies or becomes useless to the Brainjackers and all the Brainjackers lose.

Progress shows how close the Wageslave is to CTO X. At 0 the Wageslave is outside the front doors of X-CORP. Once Progress reaches 6, whoever is the Brainjacker in charge describes how they complete their mission and they win.

If bidding ever results in a tie, the Wageslave does nothing but drool in place as another round of bidding commences. If this happens The Narrator can choose to either raise the Escalation by 1 or reduce Progress by 1 as people get suspicious.

When a Brainjacker succeeds a roll they choose if either: Progress increases by 1 or Escalation reduces by 1. The Brainjacker should describe how this happens.

When a Brainjacker fails a roll they choose if either: Progress reduces by 1 or Escalation increases by 1. When this happens, The Narrator should describe what happened to cause that.

The Narrator should be frequently redescribing what is currently happening in the scene as control changes between the Brainjackers as they get closer to accomplishing their goal.

The Wageslave

After The Narrator describes the scene each Brainjacker must bid a number of Neural Nodes.

To bid, every one counts to 3 and holds up a number of fingers representing the number of Neural Nodes bid, the highest bidder gains control of the Wageslave and must reduce their Neural Nodes by the number bid, everyone else keeps their Neural Nodes.

Once winning the bid, that Brainjacker maintains control of the Wageslave until they fail a roll or their connection is disrupted. At any time a Brainjacker can spend 5 Neural Nodes, disrupting the connection of the Brainjacker currently in control. If either of those happens, another round of bidding commences.

To fit the brainjacking hardware into the Wageslave, most of their brain had to be removed, meaning that they can’t do anything alone but walk. Anything with a chance of failure requires a Processing Roll to see if a Brainjacker succeeds. A processing roll is when the Brainjacker in control rolls a 6 sided die, if they have a relevant Program they succeed on a 3 or higher. If they have to Hack, they succeed on a 5 or 6.

On a successful Hack, the player may add a new program to their Console. The program has to be relevant to how they overcame the obstacle.

Brainjackers can regain lost Neural Nodes by successfully executing Programs. For each successful roll, they increase their Neural Nodes by 1. You do not gain Neural Nodes from Hacking. If a Brainjacker runs out of Neural Nodes, their Console explodes, maiming them and providing a new tragic backstory.

666: The Devil's in the Dice Rolls Allows you to sell your soul to Wannabe Games for a chance at playing a new game... just joking.  Players take a pact with the devil to try to right a wrong in their life. Yet every roll gives the devil a chance to claim your soul. Any time a player rolls 6 6 6, the devil's grip on your immortal soul tightens.

During your quest, you can call upon infernal strength, summon the souls of great warriors (of fiddlers), shoot hellfire, or just use good ol' fashion sin to win. Using only D6 to play (although the devil is going to give you a whole bunch of them). So gather up some wayward souls of friends and ask them if they would like to make a deal.

Golgotha:

Golgotha
Publisher: Fire Ruby Designs

The Sepulchre Await...

The Golgotha. Even the names conjure images of wonder and great danger: the Paradox Spire, the Grove, the Resurrection Hive, the Delphia, the Glass Labyrinth...

Travel far beyond the bloated worlds of the inner machine planets, past the verdant and colourful pleasure worlds, past the worn out military rings where sanctioned wars rage endlessly, past even the fringe systems where separatists build their power, on into the outer dark where other races more ancient than humanity have long held sway, that is where the Golgotha lie. Ancient relics of long-dead empires, these mausoleums are riddled with countermeasures and deadly remains, not to mention bizarre alien species. Why would you choose to go there? Because Golgotha hold the secrets of unknown inhuman cultures within their echoing halls - ancient, lost technology that the Overseers, caretakers of the Human Sphere, mysteriously covet. Steal enough from the tombs and in exchange the Overseers will boost your body and mind, making you more than human, more than enough to complete your destiny.

How do you find a Golgotha? First, you need to acquire a star map – no easy feat unless you can persuade the Overseers to part with one. Once you have it, you must travel across the void using the fractures, the subspace network of cracks in space-time that allows faster than light travel. The Tomb Worlds lie at the fringe of known space where the fractures are hard to navigate, and where the risk of pirates awaiting your arrival is ever-present. Once you get there, the dangers are not over. The Golgotha lay hidden within the fringes of the Everwar, that vast and ancient conflict between the mysterious Erix Absolution and the powerful Concordant of Shelz. This area is off-limits to humans, so extreme care is a deadly necessity, and there remains a constant threat of discovery. Still, the potential reward is so great that Scavengers will readily risk the dangers of the void to make the journey.

You and your companions are on one of those vessels, a Portal Ship gliding down the tessellated streams of the fractureway, following esoteric directions on an ancient map. Soon the blue glow of the passage will crack, the stars will return, and you will be free to leave. As you move further in-system, the Golgotha fills the view plates. What waits within? Only time will tell.

Welcome to Golgotha...

Welcome to the future. Golgotha is a game of exploration and danger in mysterious, dead installations at the edges of humanity’s interstellar sphere. The players take on the roles of a crew of Scavengers who seek out, penetrate and rob these ancient lost structures, known collectively as the Golgotha. To those lucky enough to survive the risks, arifacts await – lost technology that the mysterious Overseers who rule the Human Sphere covet. Find something of value and in return the Overseers will boost your body, allowing you to fi nally seek that revenge you have always dreamed of…

Complete your destiny, or die trying.

An OSR game of exploration and discovery using the Black Hack.

Sad Robot

Sad Robot:

Sad Robot
Publisher: Blue Golem Publishing

Sad Robot is a shortform, collaborative tabletop roleplaying game for 2-4 players about the human diaspora.

Each player is a robot sent to observe, record and report on the fortunes and misfortunes of a single colony, out among the stars, in the human diaspora. Each turn, you narrate an automated missive from that robot to its colleagues.

You'll need several six-sided dice and a regular deck of playing cards, with the jokers removed. You'll also need a few hours to play all the way through.

Sad Robot is the second of a series of shortform story games written by Marcus Shepherd of Blue Golem Games. It's complete, but feedback and reviews are invaluable for any future development.

The Hoppy Pops

The Hoppy Pops:

The Hoppy Pops
Publisher: Caradoc Games

You are a Hoppy Pop, a character from one of those surreally weird kid’s shows; you know the ones, Tele Tubbies, Yo Gabba Gabba, In the Night Garden, that sort of thing...

In Episode 9 the producers made you do a strange happy dance, and it opened a gateway to Hell. You need to get home, but all the demons and imps in the Gatehouse are trying to get you, and in those outfits, who can blame them.

The Gatehouse is a hellish tower and the Hoppy Pops have been summoned to the highest level; in order to get back to their own dimension, they must find the correct exit on the ground floor.

Each Hoppy Pop has a one-use special power, whether the power of dance, story, yoga, or song, and these can have a profound effect on helping you to escape! Each Hoppy Pop is also limited by permanent impediment: maybe you jingle when you move, maybe you only speak in emotive noises, maybe you narrate every action you take, or maybe you speak only through a squeaky-voiced hand puppet!

The Blackest of Deaths - Dire Old School Fantasy RPG

"The Blackest of Deaths is what it says on the tin. Your character is dropped into a brutal, unforgiving world that is actively opposed to your survival. You're prey that doesn't know it's place yet. There's no character advancement, no way to pull victory from the jaws of defeat. There is you, a handful of meager items, a few minimal abilities, and the finality of defeat.

Now, that sounds like a real downer to most. Why would anyone want to play that? Isn't the point of a roleplaying game to experience some kind of power fantasy and character agency? Well, the answer to all of these questions is yes -- and that's the beauty of Blackest. Surviving to fight another day in this game feels like a genuine accomplishment. Your character will struggle like never before. Your character will fail. Your character will die.

But not every time. And on those rare occasions when you do manage to leap from the gaping, inexorable jaws of oblivion, you'll walk away with a great story to tell your fellow gamers and a gaming experience worth remembering. You will live. You will cheat death. You will survive.

This time..."
